First ‘kala-azar’ patient found in Jessore in 69 years
JESSORE: Doctors have diagnosed a woman in Sadar upazila with ‘kala-azar’, 69 years after the disease was last detected in the district. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ‘kala-azar’ is the popular name for ‘visceral leishmaniasis’ that is characterized by irregular bouts of fever, substantial weight loss, swelling of the spleen and liver, and anaemia. The patient was identified as Taslima Khatun, 35, wife of Nazrul Islam, a richshaw puller of Nurpur area of Sadar upazila. Taslima has been undergoing treatment at 250-Bed General Hospital from Wednesday last. Nazrul Islam said Taslima, a mother of three, had suffered from jaundice six or seven month ago. Since then she had been suffering from fever.
Truck driver killed in Habiganj road crash
HABIGANJ: A truck driver was killed and three others were injured in a road accident at Sadarghat Natunbazar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Nabiganj upazila of the district yesterday morning. The deceased was Azizul Islam, son of Abdul Kuddus of Companiganj upazila in Noakhali district.
Police said the accident occurred when a rock-laden truck collided head-on with another truck in the area at about 7 am, leaving truck driver Azizul dead on the spot and three others injured. The injured were sent to local hospital, reports BSS.
Woman killed in road mishap in Fakirhat

An unidentified woman (20/22) met her tragic end when she was killed in a road mishap took place on Dhaka-Khulna via- Mawa Highway at Biswaroader Moor near at Fakirhat Bazar under Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district on Tuesday at noon. It is learnt that the ill-fated woman was going else where as a co-rider of a motor cycle through the highway and when they reached the place of occurrence the motor cycle tried to cross a peed breaker, but it dashed with the breaker. As a result, she fell from the motor cycle on the road and at the same time she was run over by a loaded truck that was behind the motor cycle and she was killed on the spot. Then the motor cyclist took the dead body to Fakirhat Upazila Health Complex and fled away leaving the same there. In this connection a case was registered with Katakhali Highway PS (under Fakirhat Upaziala). The woman was in semi fair complexion and she clad a black burkha. Later the dead body was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for its autopsy on the same day at night.
One held with 14-kg hemp in Gopalganj
GOPALGANJ: Police in a drive arrested an alleged drug peddler with 14 kgs of cannabis from Basuria area in Tungipara upazila of the district on Sunday. The arrestee is Abu Hanif Mollah of Comilla district. On information, a team of Tungipara thana police in a pre-dawn raid at the area and arrested Mollah with a cannabis loaded sack. Mahmudul Hoque, officer-in-charge of Tungipara thana, said Mollah was going to Pirojpur through Tungipara from Comilla carrying the hemp leaded sack. A case was recorded with Tungipara thana in this connection, reports BSS.
5 injured by robbers in Laxmipur
LAXMIPUR: Five of a family, including a woman, were injured as robbers stormed in and looted valuables from their house in Saicha area of Bamni union parishad in Raipur upazila early Monday. Three of the injured were identired as Kaji Najir Ahmed, his son Alamgir Hossain and Faizunnesa.
Md Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station, said a gang of robbers numbering 10-15 stormed into a house of local Najir Ahmed early in the morning. They looted cash and gold ornaments worth TK 3 lakh from the house.
When the house inmates resisted the robbers, they stabbed and beat them indiscriminately, leaving five of the inmates injured. The injured were admitted at Laxmipur Sadar Hospital.On information Police visited the spot, reports UNB.
