Man held with phensidyl in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: Members of Detective Branch (DB) of police in a drive arrested a man along with 23 bottles of Indian Phensidyl syrup from Banglabandha area in Tetulia upazila on Thursday. The arrested was identified as Mohammad Mizan, 28, son of Aftabuddin of Dighalgram area in the upazila.DB police sources said police arrested Mizan while he was selling the drugs at a local market in the afternoon. Later police recovered 23 bottles of Phensidyl from his possession.A case was filed in this connection, reports UNB.
Tree collapse kills old man in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: A septuagenarian man was killed when a tree collapsed on him during a storm that swept the city at Tikipara under Boalia thana on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Abu Taher, 75, a resident of the area. Witnesses said a tree collapsed on Abu Taher when a storm ravaged the area at about 9:00pm, leaving him dead on the spot, reports UNB.
9 houses gutted in devastating fire in Bandarban
BANDARBAN: At least nine houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Modhampara of the district in the early morning yesterday. Local sources said the fire originated from a furniture shop and soon engulfed the other adjacent houses. Being informed, fire fighters rushed to the spot and control the fire with the help of local people after three hours efforts. Seven persons were injured in this connection. The fire damaged valuable worth about Tk 50 lakh, the fire victim’s people said, reports BSS.
9 Jamaat men arrested in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ: Police arrested nine Jammat-e-Islami workers including its upazila unit secretary from Shologhar area in Shrinagar upazila here on Thursday night. Police said they conducted a drive in the area when the Jamaat men were engaged in a secret meeting. During the raid, the Jamaat workers hurled some bombs on police but none was hurt. The arrestees are Alhaj MA Malek, 54, M Laknur Rahman, 30, M Chandhu Miah, 42, M Ali Nur, 43, M Mosharaf Sheikh, 55, M Shamim Molla, 41, Haji M Omar Faruque Molla, 50, Hatem Ali, 42 and Selim Sheikh, 28. Officer in charge (OC) of Shrinagar thana Sheikh Mahbubur Rahman said although nine were held but about same number of Jamaat men fled away. “According to the information received from the arrestees, they were holding the meeting to carry out destructive activities, ” the OC said, reports BSS.
Madrasa girl commits suicide in Sylhet
SYLHET: A female madrasa student allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a beam of her house at Bubrapur village in Chhatak upazila on Friday.The deceased was identified as Rokeya begum,13, a student of Kalaruka Dakhil Madrasa and daughter of Rahmat Ali.Neighbours said Rokeya’s elder brother beat her on Thursday night and in a huff with his brother she committed suicide by hanging herself with the house beam.Later on information, police recovered Rokeya’s hanging body and sent it to Sunamganj Sadar hospital for an autopsy, reports UNB.
Current net worth Tk 12 lakh seized in Chandpur
CHANDPUR:Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive seized 41,400 meters of illegal current net worth Tk 12 lakh from Chowdhuryghat area in the district town on Friday.Acting on secret information, a team of Coast Guard members led by its Sub-lieutenant Jakir Hossain conducted a drive in the area and seized 41,400 meters of current net worth Tk 12 lakh in the afternoon.The net was being taken to Laxmipur, said Coast Guard members. However, no one was arrested in this connection.The seized current net was deposited to the District Fisheries Office, reports UNB.
Man drowns in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ: A man drowned in a pond at Dorabati village in Tongibari upazila on Friday.The deceased was identified as Ohid Bepari, 35, a resident of the village. Witnesses said Ohid along with some of his friends went down into a pond near his house for taking bath at about 1:00 pm.After a while, all but Ohid got up onto the bank of the pond. When his friends searched for Ohid, they found him entangled in a fishing net under the water.Later he was rescued and rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead, reports UNB..

One hemp peddler jailed in Natore

 A mobile court sentenced one hemp peddler to one year non-vagarious imprisonment on May 2. The convict was identified as Md. Zahurul Islam, 28, son of late Janab Ali of village Haibatpur purbapara under Natore thana in Natore district. Sub-Inspector of Bonpar police investigation center Md. Rafiqul Islam along with his departmental forces launched an anti-drug drive and arrested the hemp peddler Md.. Zahurul Islam with about 400 grams of hemp from Dhanaidah brick field area under Baraigram upazila in Natore district on May . He was produced before mobile court headed by Executive Magistrate and Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Baraigram Mosammat Sharifunnesa who sentenced him to one year imprisonment. Later he was sent to Natore district jail.
