Post-poll violence leaves 40 hurt in Habiganj

At least 40 people were injured in a post-polls clash at Monglapur village under Aushkandi union of Habiganj’s Nabiganj upazila on Sunday night. Locals said the clash ensued after the supporters of defeated chairman candidate Maolana Mostofa Ahmed swooped on the supporters of elected member candidate Joytun Miah because Joytun berated Mostafa at the village. Both groups used sticks and other weapons during the clash that gradually spread over the entire village and the adjacent areas. Being informed, police from Nabiganj Police Station rushed to the spot and struggled for an hour to bring the situation under control. They fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the feuding groups. Abdul Baten, officer-in-charge of Nabiganj Police Station, said around 40 people from both sides was injured in the clash. Of the injured, five were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, seven to Nabiganj Health Complex, and 13 to private clinics. The rest were given first aid. Additional police were deployed to avert further trouble, the OC added.

Two tobacco companies fined in Kishoreganj

A mobile court of Kishoreganj District Administration has fined Tk 70 thousand to two tobacco company named British American Tobacco Company Ltd, its distributor M/S Islam Traders and Subud Biri Factory at Bara bazar in Kishoreganj town on Monday for violation of tobacco control law . Islam Traders fined 50 thousand and Subud Biri Factory fined 20 thousand. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and Executive Magistrate Tarafder Md. Akhter Jamil led the mobile court. They are fined for selling cigarettes without pictorial health warnings on the packet. During the drive a huge number cigarettes packets and printed materials were seized and destroyed.

Bomb hurled at Jessore AL candidate’s office

Unidentified miscreants hurled a crude bomb at the office of the symbol boat at Sharsha in Jessore on Monday night. The bomb was exploded there to create panic, said sub inspector Babul Akhter, in-charge, Gorpara police camp. Obaidur Rahman, general secretary, Dihi union Awami League told that the electioneering officer of the symbol boat at Saratala Bazar under Dihi union council came under bomb attack at around 9pm on Monday. But none was hurt in the explosion. No case was lodged. None was arrested.

One held with arms, ammo in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged arms trader with a foreign-made pistol, five round of bullet and a magazine from Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district on Tuesday. The arrested person was identified as Md. Akhtarul Islam, 24, son of Md. Abdur Rahim of Kansat Kazipara village under the upazila. Acting on a tip off, an operation team of RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj camp raided a mango orchard in Taltala area under Mobarakpur village of Shibganj upazila at around 3:15 pm and arrested him with the arms and ammunition.
