4 cops closed for demanding bribe

Four police personals have been closed for demanding bribe at Barisal regional passport office. Abu Sayeed, Assistant Commissioner and spokesman of Barisal Metropolitan Police, acknowledging the facts said accused Sub Inspector AB Ujjal, Nayek Habibur Rahman, Constables Imamul and Mustafa closed to Barisal police line from their duty place at regional passport office on early Monday. Further action would be taken after investigation, Abu Sayeed said. Sumana Sharmin Shaon, deputy director Barisal regional passport office, said the accused police personals demanded bribe from Lt. Jawad Habib Chowdhury alluring him to do works for issuing machine readable passport soon. Lt. Jawad was assistant management engineer of MRP at Dhaka and came to visit Barisal office on Sunday. Soon after entering at Barisal passport office the accused police personals offered him to do all work for issuing MRP speedily and smoothly without any trouble in lieu of bribe with the help of passport office assistant Mainul Islam.

‘Terrorist’ held with pistol, ammo in Jessore

BENAPOLE: Police arrested an alleged terrorist in possession of a foreign-made pistol, one magazine and three rounds of bullet from Ramnagar Dakkhinpara in Sadar upazila of Jessore on Wednesday night. The arrestee was identified as Waliar Rahman Prince, son of Haidar Ali, a resident of the village. Officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali Police Station Elias Hossain said tipped off, a team of police conducted a raid on the house of Prince in the area and arrested him at about 11:30pm. Later, the law enforcers also recovered a foreign-made pistol, one magazine and three rounds of bullet after searching his house. The arrestee was wanted in several cases with the different police stations, the OC added. A case was filed in this connection, reports UNb.

Souvenir of Legal Aid Committee published

A souvenir namely ‘Saran’ was published at the initiative of District Legal Aid Committee (DLAC) on Tuesday evening as a part of the celebration of National Legal Aid Day-2016. A simple function organized by souvenir publication sub committee was also held at the Circuit House of the town here at 8 pm. District and sessions judge Rasheda Sultana attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest. District judge, Nari o shishu Nirjatan Daman Tribunal Ratneshwar Bhattacharja, deputy commissioner M. Abdus Samad, superintendent of police Ashraful Islam, and administrator of zila parishad Advocate Syed Shams-ul-Alam Hiru were present as the special guests.
All the judges of district judgeship and judicial magistracy, panel lawyers, and the members of DLAC, and representatives of BRAC, SKS Foundation and GUK including the journalists attended the function.

Three get life term for kidnapping, raping in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ: Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal in Manikganj awarded life term rigorous imprisonment to three persons for kidnapping and raping a school girl. Hasina Rowshan, the Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge pronounced the judgment on Tuesday. The convicted are Md Sikandar, Md. Babul Sikder and Md Moslem Mollah of village Khabashpur under Manikganj Sadar Upazila of the district. The case in brief is that Md Sikander with the help of two others kidnapped Rupali Akhter, a school girl of the village Khabashpur on November19, 2005 and took her to different places and raped her. Rupali Akther, however, managed to escape from the clutches of Sikander and filed a case in the Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal.
The tribunal judge awarded the main accused Sikander the life term rigorous imprisonment in two separate sections and the conviction would be effective one after another. On the other hand, Md Babul Sikder and Md Moslem Mollah were given life term rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 6,000 each and in default three months more imprisonment, reports BSS.

2 get life term for murder in Sylhet

A court here recently convicted two people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment for killing their cousin in 2010 .The lifers were – Nurul Amin, 45, son of Mokhlis Ali and his cousin Islam Uddin, 35, resident of the Alinagar village under Kotowali thana of the city.The court also fined them TK 30,000, in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment.According to prosecution, Nurul along with his two cousins Islam and Aslam called out their another cousin Siddik Ali, son of Kala Miah, a resident of Putmara village of Companyganj upazila, from his house on March 6, 2010. They stabbed him to death and left his body at Baghai Dohor area near the Surma river of the upazila over money related dispute. Police recovered the body on March 9. Later, victim’s father filed a case with Companyganj Police Station accusing three people on March 10.
