Programmes taken to observe World Environment Day in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: A preparatory meeting to chalk out a program to observe the World Environment Day of June 5 was held here on Sunday afternoon in the conference room of Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur. The meeting was chaired by ADC (Gen) ANM Abdus Sabur while Deputy Director (DD) of Environment Directorate Md. Saifullah elaborately described the importance of this day in the perspective of our country which is facing constant threat of the adverse impact of climatic change and other natural disasters throughout the year. The DD pointed out that this years’ slogan is “Go Wild for Life” indicating the conservation of forestry in the country for maintaining ecological balance that would help the threat on environment. Decisions were taken that two schools of this town will hold special program on environment in their respective schools. The Shishu Academy of Faridpur will arrange art and painting competitions among the children to create awareness among the children about protecting environment, reports BSS.
Road mishap kills one in Jessore

A youth was killed on the spot while four others were injured as a speedy bus and a goods laden truck ran over the car at Kishmat Nawapara on the Jessore- Magura Road under Kotwali police station at around 9:30 am on Friday.The dead was identified as Asaduzzaman, 32, driver of the private car and son of Sekendar Ali of Uttar Kamlapur of Dhaka city. The wounded Jessore based camera person of Bangladesh Television M Shamim, 34, Ziaur Rahman, 40, of Shyampur village, his wife Sonia, 30 and their baby Tasim, 3 were rushed to Jessore Medical College Hospital. The wounded and the killed are passengers of the private car. Ilias Hossain, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station and eyewitnesses said the private car heading towards Jessore town met the tragic accident as a speedy bus coming from opposite direction ran over it. A goods laden truck also crashed with the road under its wheels soon after the first incident. Locals rushed to the spot and rescued the dead and wounded after cutting the car. Traffic communication on the road remained suspended for about an hour due to the accident.
Train service on Dhaka-Mymensingh route resumes
GAZIPUR: Train communications between Dhaka and Mymensingh resumed yesterday morning after six hours following a railway derailment here. The services were disrupted following the derailment of an intercity train “Haur Express” at about 2.30am in Bowal area of the district. Railway police sources said the train bound for Mohonganj from Dhaka went off the track affecting railway communications between Dhaka and Mymensingh. A case has been filed in this connection with Syedpur Thana, the OC added, reports BSS.
2 held with 2,027 bottles of phensidyl in C’nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested two people along with 2,027 bottles of Phensidyl from Dakkhinchari area in Sadar upazila early Monday. The arrestees were identified as Badal Ali, 40, son of Ahammad Ali, a resident of Diaar Dhainagar village, and Bazlur Rahman, 52, son of Sultan Mondal, a resident of Dakkhinchari Mirzapur village of the upazila. Sahidar Rahman, assistant superintendent of police of Chapainawabganj Rab Camp, said tipped off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo at about 3:30am. Later, the Rab members recovered the 2,027 bottles of Phensidyl from their possession. A case was filed in this connection.
