GSBPA announces new programme in Sylhet

‘Gas Sangjog Bondho Protirodh Andolan’ (Movement to resist gas connection suspension) GSBPA announced a new programme recently. The organisation held street rallies at the Sylhet city suburban Tilagarh and at Shahporan gate and announced they will hold 10 rallies till 14 May to press the long-felt demand. Senior lawyer and social activist Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury presided over the rallies. The leaders also said that next programme will be announced from the rally at the city’s Court point area on May 21. Sources in the state-run Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution System Limited, dedicated for the Sylhet region informed that, on January 3, 2013, the government had suspended giving new gas connections all over the country, except the Sylhet region, which has the maximum number of gas fields with a good reserve. Amid a countrywide suspension since then, the company continued new connections and load raising as Sylhet region has enough gas pressure.
Orientation of ‘Akha’ held in Manikganj

With the assistance of Donor organisation ICCO Cooperation Christian Commission For Development in Bangladesh(CCDB) arranged 2-day long orientation of agriculture helping chula ‘Akha’ at Shibalaya CCDB Central Training Centre on 04 May 3 and 4 . Jayanta Adhikary, Executive Director of CCDB, inaugurated the programme. ICCO Cooperation Representative Heleen Venderbeek, Regional Manager Raisa Choudhary, lobby and advocacy manager Shegufta Sharmin, Shibalaya UNO AKM Galiv Khan, Agriculture Officer Md. Anawar Hossain, CCDB Regional Manager Debashis Kumar Dey, Cooperator Abu Sayed, Biochar project officers Krisno Kumar Shingho, Sheikh Habibur Rahman and Jannatul Ferdous, Reporter Babul Akter Manjur, Principal Mohammad Younus Ali took part in the workshop. Experience of Traditional Chula of 478 families of Daulatpur of Dinajpur, Mandra of Naogoan and Shibalaya of Manikganj was shared in the function. 30 representatives of different areas took part in the programme.
Sources said, Canadian Scientist Dr. Julian and CCDB Development Policy Advisor Md. Mahabubul Islam invented the agriculture helping chula ‘Akha’ Recently. Co-inventor of Akha said that this kind of Chula is healthy, quick, easy to use, smoke free and less expensive.
3 BCL activists sent to jail for snatching mobiles

Three activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student front of ruling Awami League, was sent to jail after produced before the court on Thursday for snatching mobile phone and money from students of Barisal University. The accused were Shakil Mridha, joint convener of BCL Bandar Thana unit, Foysal Haoladar, Rakib Hossain, BCL activists of the same unit. S M Mahbub Alam, officer in charge of Barisal Bandar police station, said the accused were produced before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday after a case was lodged against seven accused under speedy trial act by Sourav Talukdar, student of management department of BU on Wednesday night. In the case it was alleged that he along with Mehedi Hasan and four other female classmates enjoying a boat ride on river and shoal near Laharhut under Barisal Bandar police station after ending semester final examination on Wednesday noon.
At that time a group of BCL cadres led by Shakil Mridha coming on a trawler attacked and beating them snatched mobile phones and money from them.
Then they seek help from Bandar police station and Assistant Sub Inspector Amzad Hossain operating a raid succeeded to detain three of the snatchers and recovered snatched six mobile phones and Tk 1170 from the miscreants.
