One held with firearms in Jessore

Police in a drive, arrested a young man with a foreign made pistol, two round of bullets and a magazine from Tajbijpur area in Chaugacha upazila of the district Thursday night. The arrested person was identified as Ekramul Hossen, 28, son of Sabed Ali of Matchakla village of the upazila. Officer-in-charge of Chaugacha police M Mashiur Rahman said on secret information, police conducted the drive in the area and arrested him with the arms. A case was filed in this connection.
Sari, cloth worth Taka 1.7 crore seized in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: Members of the BGB in a pre-dawn raid seized huge quantity of Indian sari and cloth worth more than Taka 1.7 crore from a covered van at pourasava area in Kalaroa upazila of the district on Thursday. Acting on a tip off, a team of BGB 38 Battalion of Satkhira conducted the raid in the area and recovered 2,740 pieces of sari and 3,200 meters of cloth from the covered van worth more than Taka 1.7 crore after making a search in the vehicle, Battalion commander Lt.col.Arman Hossain said. The driver and helper managed to flee from the scene leaving the vehicle as the BGB team gave a signal to stop the covered van, the sources added. The seized sari and cloth were deposited with local customs office. A case was recorded with Kalaroa thana in this connection, reports BSS.
Mancha celebrates Nizami’s death sentence in Rangpur
RANGPUR: Ganojagoron Mancha (GM) organised ananda procession and rally here on Thursday night to celebrate upholding death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami by Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Leaders of GM expressed satisfaction over rejection of Nizami’s review petition by the Appellate Division against verdict of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 sentencing him to death and said it has fulfilled hopes of the common people. Hundreds of leaders and activists of GM and different pro-liberation socio-political, professional and cultural organisations, youths, students, civil society members and common people participated in the rally. Originating from Rangpur Press Club premises, the ananda rally paraded the city streets and again gathered there at post-rally discussion with District Coordinator of GM Rakibul Hasan Rocket in the chair. GM activists, including its Adviser Dr Syed Mamunur Rahman, President of district Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu, District Coordinator of BSD (Marxist) Abdul Kuddus, President of district unit of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) valiant freedom fighter Shahadat Hossain, addressed.
JCD leader sent to jail in Sylhet

A local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was sent to jail following his arrest in two cases filed over violence on Tuesday. Police arrested Abdul Kaiyum, acting general secretary of JCD of Bishwanath upazila unit and the convener of Sylhet MC College unit of Ilias Mukti Chhatra Songram Parishad, on the Bishwanath-Jagannathpur road in the afternoon. Officer-in-charge of Bishwanath Police Station Abdul High said police arrested Kaiyum following an arrest warrant in two separate cases filed with Kotwali and Bishwanath police stations in connection with violence.Local activists of JCD, student wing of BNP, staged a demonstration on the court premises protesting the arrest of Kaiyum. Later, police produced him before a court that sent him to jail in the evening, the OC added.
Two teachers convicted for insulting Prophet

A mobile court headed by Md. Anwar Parvez, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate of Chitalmari Upazila in Bagerhat district convicted two teachers of Hijla High School under the same Upazila and sentenced them to suffer simple imprisonment for 6 months on Monday on the charge of passing insulting comments about Islam and its Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SM), according to a report received here. The convicted teachers are Krisnapada Mahly, Headmaster of the High School and its senior science teacher Ashok Kumar Ghosal (55). Locals said that on Sunday while senior science teacher Ashok Kumar Ghosal was teaching in the class-X he passed insulting comments about Islam and its Prophet Mohammad (SM). The matter was brought to the notice of Krisnpada Mahly, Headmaster of the School by the students and some guardians. But the Headmaster rebuked the students and the guardians for making a complaint to him against the science teachers. Moreover, the Headmaster supported the accused teacher. As a result, strong repercussion and resentment were developed among the students, guardians of the school and the locals. In the following morning the agitated students, guardians and the local people went to the school at about 10 am and confined the Headmaster and the science teacher in the office room of the school.

Being informed of the matter Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate of Chitalmari, Officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Chitalmari PS and Upazila Secondary Education Officer of Chitalmari rushed to the spot and rescued the teachers. Then the Upazila Nirbahi Officer formed a mobile court and after examining the witnesses and evidences found the Headmaster and the science teacher guilty u/s 298 of BPC (1860) and awarded them the aforesaid punishment.
