A man was arrested on Sunday in Bishwashpara of Habiganj for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl on Wednesday. The arrestee Ilias Miah, 38, of the area is a local trader. Family members of the girl said Ilias lured the girl with chocolates and raped her after taking into a house in the city’s Madina Market area on Wednesday evening.Inspector of Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Mosarraf Hossain said they arrested Elias following a case filed by the girl’s mother.
Gonojagoron Mancha protests Nazim Uddin killing
Leaders and activists of Beanibazar Gonojagoron Mancha yesterday formed a human chain protesting the killing of secular activist and Jagannath University student Nazim Uddin Samad. Speakers at the human chain at Beanibazar Upzila Bazar also demanded justice for the slain activist. Hasan Shahriar, spokesperson of the mancha, said the government has failed to ensure security and justice for the progressive writers and activists. The killings will curb freedom of speech if the justice is delayed or denied.Mentionable, Nazimuddin was killed by assailants in Old Dhaka on Wednesday.
16,000 Yaba seized in Brahmanbaria, 4 held
BRAHMANBARIA: Police arrested four persons and seized 16,000 Yaba tablets during a drive at Gopinathpur village in Kasba upazila of the district on Monday night. Acting on a tip off, a team of Kasba thana police conducted the drive at Gopinathpur, a remote village of the upazila, and seized 16,000 pieces of contraband Yaba tablets from a pickup van. They also arrested four persons in this connection. The arrestees are – driver Saidur Sarder, 34, Kawsar Miah,38, Ashiqur Rahman,30, and SM Aminul Islam,27. Mohammad Mohiuddin, officer-in-charge of Kasba thana, said the arrested persons were sent to jail on Tuesday. A case was recorded against them with Kasba thana under the Drug Controlled Act, reports BSS.
BCC employees demand dues

Employees of Barisal City Corporation on Tuesday noon holding agitation rally cordoning chief executive officer at his office demanded arrear dues and end of salary discriminations. They chanted slogans against the BCC Mayor, CEO and other officials during the rally. Witnesses said salaries of permanent and master roll employees of Barisal City Corporation became arrear since last five months. At the end of Bangla year they became under pressure from the borrowers to clear their outstanding dues according to Halkhata rituals. Abdul Halim, one of the salary deprived employees, said not only that, scale of salary also discriminated between the employees appointed at the time of former and running mayor. One employee appointed during the Mayorship of Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, late Shawkat Husain Heron getting Tk.4-5000, while the employees appointed during the running Mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal, getting Tk 8-9000 per month, Halim said demanding end of discriminations. Shakhawat Hossain, officer in charge of Barisal Kotwali police station, said police rushed to the spot controlled the situation and freed BCC CEO from cordoning after about 12:30pm.
