Muggers loot money injuring 2 in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: Muggers looted Tk one lakh shooting two staff of a Grameenphone distributor office on the Park Road in the district town on Monday. The injured were identified as Asek Hasan Pallab, 35, distributor of the district Grameenphone office, and Shawkat Hossain, 55, security guard of the same office. Quoting witnesses, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Rajiur Rahman said the two staff of the Grameenphone office came under the attack by the muggers around 11:45am while they along with Tk one lakh cash in a bag were entering the district branch of National Bank to deposit the money there. The muggers opened fire at Shawkat and Pallab, leaving them injured. Critically injured, Shawkat was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.

5 cops among 20 hurt in Natore clash

NATORE: At least 20 people, including five policemen, were injured in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and police in Harishpur Bypass area of the district town on Monday morning. Police arrested three Jamaat-Shibir men in connection with the clash. Witnesses said a group of activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession as part of their central programme in Harishpur Bypass area at about 8:00 am. When they reached near Ekata Clinic in the area, police chased off the Jamaat-Shibir men dispersing their procession and a clash ensued. The Jamaat-Shibir activists started hurling brick chips at the law enforcers. At one stage, the law enforcers lobbed teargas shells and fired rubber bullets on the Jamaat-Shibir men, leaving 15 activists injured. Five policemen were also injured during the clash. The injured were admitted to Christian Missionary Hospital, reports UNB.

Sundari wood worth Tk4 lakh recovered

Huge quantity of cut band Sundari wood worth Tk.4 lakh of Sundarban forest were recovered by the forest guards of Sharankhola Forest Range in the Eastern Division of the forest from the different places of Swaraupkathi Upazila in Pirojpur district on Thursday. Matiar Rahman, Forest Ranger of Bagerhat Sadar informs that acting on a secret information the forest guards raided Kalibarir canal, Rajabari canal, Baniari canal and Labanmilker canal under Swarupkathi Upazila and recovered 4 hundred log CFT Sundari wood with the help of the police of Swarupkathi PS. But no body was arrested at that time in connection with the recovery of the wood. The recovered Sundari wood was brought to Sharankhola Range office on the sane day at night. The market price of the wood is Tk. 4 lakh.

5 injured in Laxmipur Jubo League clash

Laxmipur: At least five people were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Jubo League at Basurhat in Sadar upazila on Sunday morning. Police and witnesses said Jubo League Charshahi union unit convenor Morshed Alam and its leader Mamun had long been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy in the area. The clash ensued when a group of people led by Bablu, brother of Morshed, beat up Arif Hossain, a Jubo League activist of the Mamun-led faction, on Saturday night.As a sequel to that, a chase and counter-chase took place during the melee when both the groups exchanged several gunshots in the morning, leaving five people injured, including three with bullets. Informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional police members were deployed in the area.Critically injured Mannan was admitted to Noakhali General Hospital and the rest to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, reports UNB.

Work on 4 bridges nears completion in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, April 21, 2014 (BSS)-Construction of four bridges in different areas of the district is nearing completion. Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) is implementing the project at a cost of Taka more than 35.67 crorein Sarishabari, Islampur, Melandaha and Jamalpur Sadar upazilas. On an average 95 per cent work on the bridges have already been completed and the rest will be accomplished by June next,
