Philosopher Aroj Ali Matubbar remembered

The rationalist philosopher of rural Bangladesh, Aroj Ali Matubbar was remembered on Friday at his native village Lamchhori near Barisal city calling to preserve study and follow philosophy of his life and works. ‘Darshonik Aroj Manjil Public Library’ organised a remembrance programme on occasion of 30th death anniversary of the philosopher. A discussion on life and achievement of Aroj Ali, with children- juvenile painting competition, recitation of poetry and cultural function at the residence of the Aroj Ali was held. Shah Azizur Rahman Khokon, president of the library, presided over the programme. Among others Advocate S M Iqbal, president of Barisal Sangskritik Sangothan Samannoy Parishad, Advocate A K Azad, district CPB president, Md. Salimullah Akand, teacher’s association leader, Abdul Mannan, freedom fighter addressed the program. The speakers said Aroj Ali Matubbar was a truly homegrown philosopher without any formal academic training in any institution of higher learning. It was a difficult task, especially in a country with low literacy, where there is practically no tradition of debates over dogmas, creeds, beliefs and religion, they said. Yet Aroj Ali Matubbar came to be regarded as one of the most brilliant rationalists the country has ever produced.
Woman electrocuted in Chuadanga
A middle-aged woman died from electrocution at Boroputimari village in Alamdanga upazila on Friday. Witnesses said Arzina Begum, 50, wife of Alam Hossain of the village was injured when she came in contact with live electric wire at her house around 6 pm.Later she died on way to Sadar hospital, reports UNB.
Jhenaidah-Kushtia road blockade for 4 hours

The Jhenaidah-Kushtia Highway was blocked for four hours when two trucks met head on collision at Dudsar village under Sailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah on Saturday morning. As a result movement of all types of traffic vehicles remain stranded on from and to Jhenaidah. The vehicles from and to the northern area were the worst sufferers here. The accident occurred at about 3.00 AM as a Khulna bound potato laden truck started from Rajshahi went out of order. Another truck from same direction hit the disordered truck from the back and skidded off the road made the blockade. The local people at about 10.00 AM were able to make the highway cleared and the transport resumed then. Sailkupa police officer in charge Mahiul Islam when contacted said, no one was injured following the incident. Movement of transport vehicles was normal since 10.00 AM, OC said.
