Driver killed in road mishap in Fakirhat

Hasan Shaikh (50), driver of a Mahendra, 3 wheeled passenger vehicle was killed on the spot when it collided head on with a speeding covered van on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in front of Shahid Smrity College under Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district on Friday noon. It is reported that the Mahendra was going from Rupsa (Khulna) to Fakirhat and when it reached the place of occurrence it collided head on with the covered van that was coming from the opposite direction. As a result driver of the Mahendra was killed on the spot. Following the accident the agitated people blockaded the Highway for half an hour. Being informed of the matter police rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control, recovered the dead body and sent it to the morgue for its autopsy.
Katka Tragedy Day observed at KU

Katka Tragedy Day was observed in Khulna University on Sunday. KU authorities has chalked out different programs marking the Day. KU sources said, on March 13, 2004, eleven students of architechture discipline of the university including two BUET students drowned into the deep sea while they went to excursion at Katka point in the Sundarbans. The deceased were Arnaj Rifat Rupa, Mahmudur Rahman, Maksumul Aziz Mostazi, Abdullahel Baki, Kazi Mueed bin Wali, Kawsar Ahmed Khan, Munadil Raihan bin Mahbub, Md. Ashrafuzzaman and Towhidul Enam of KU and Samiul and Sakil of BUET. Since then KU has been observing the day as mourning day. KU had taken different programmes including wearing black badge, mourning rally, placing floral wreaths on Katka monument, photograph exhibition, Milad Doa Mahfil, distribution foods among orphans , discussion meeting and lighting candle light vigil in the evening.
Two held, arms seized in Jessore

Abhaynagar police on Saturday night arrested two suspected killers along with foreign pistol and four rounds of gun shots while they were attempting to kill Juba League activist Sujon Patwari entering into his business outlet at Noorbagh under Nawapara industrial town. The arrested are Babul Sheikh and Akbar Shikder of Bichhali village in Narail district, said the police. Sheikh Nasir Uddin, officer in-charge, Abhyanagar police station told that the miscreants are professional killers. They were hired to kill a Juba League man over internal feud.
Youth held with Phensedyl in Sylhet

Members of Rapid Action Battalion-9 (RAB) in a drive held a youth with 52 bottles of Phensedyl from Zakiganj upazila under Sylhet district on Friday evening. The arrested was identified as Jaynal, 37. Sources concerned said, on tip-off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in Eidgah area of the upazila in the evening and held Jaynal along with 52 bottles of Phensedyl syrup. Later, the Jaynal and the seized Phensedyl were handed over to Zakiganj Police Station on Saturday
Jatra actor dies on stage in Sylhet
Veteran Jatra artist and director Nibaron Chandra Das died of a heart failure while acting in a jatra (traditional open air folk theatre) in Kabi Nazrul auditorium of Sylhet on Friday, he was 55. He was also the director of the jatra by Bhhati Bangla Natyagoshty of Dirai, Sunamgonj. During the last day of Nandik Natyadal’s silver jubilee celebration, they were staging the play “Goriber Aartonad” when he became sick and was rushed to RRMC hospital, where the doctors declared him dead, said Supriya Deb Shanto, convener of the festival.
