RUJA condoles ABM Musa’s death
RU Correspondent :
Rajshahi University Journalist Association (RUJA) condoled at the death of a veteran journalist ABM Musa who was the inspiration of the country’s journalists. In a condolence messange, RUJA president and general secretary Shakir Ahmed and Sayeed Shuvo respectively expressed deep shock at the death of ABM Musa. They also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Quiz contest on road safety held

A day long quiz competition for the students on road safety awareness organized by BRAC ‘s Road Safety programme and Advocacy for Social Change was held at Rajadee-Chinispur High School hall room on Thursday. Kamruzzaman Kamrul Mayor of Narsingdi Pourasabha and Chairman of the Managing Committee of Rajadee-Chinispur High School attended the function a chief guest with Head Master of the school Abu Bakkar Siddik in the chair. The function was addressed among others by District Brac Representative Probal Kumar Shaha, BSS Narsingdi District correspondent Mahmmad Ahu Taher, Social Communicator Promoting Safe Road Code Project and advocacy for Social Change Parvej kairi and Head mistress of Rajadee Chinispur Govt. Primary School Lipi Rani Sarkar. A total of 110 students of the School took part in the quiz competition. After the quiz competition a demonstration, an animation show and a Mass drama on road safety awareness arranged for the students. Besides an oath on the road safety was also arranged for the students. A total of twelve hundred students and 20 teachers both high school and primary schools took part in the demonstration and animation show. The students and teachers also enjoyed the mass drama on road safety awareness.

Housewife killed in road accident in Mehendiganj

A housewife has been killed at the spot after hit by a motorcycle on Patarhut-Ulania road in Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal on Thursday noon. The victim was identified as Rizia Begum, 60, wife of Shukkur Chowkidar from Durgapur union of Mehendiganj. Sub Inspector Shaheb Ali of Mehendiganj police station, said the unidentified motorcycle hit Rizia Begum while she was crossing the road. Police recovering the dead body sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla medical College morgue for autopsy after lodging a case of unnatural death, the police officer told.
9 drug peddlers held in Jessore
BENAPOLE (Jessore: Police in separate drives arrested nine drug peddlers from different parts of the Jessore town on Thursday night. The arrestees were Baby, Rozina, Mahidul, Sumon, Palash, Hadiuzzaman Manik, Shukkur Ali, Liton Gazi and Ujjal. Sources said a team of Kotwali thana police conducted separate drives in the town and arrested them. Earlier, police arrested Khokon along with 20 bottles of Phensidyl from Chachra Raipara area in the town on Wednesday night. Police filed a case against seven people in this connection. Following his confessional statement police conducted separate drives in the town and arrested the nine drug peddlers, reports UNB.

3 arms, 4 bombs seized in Dhamrai
MANIKGANJ: Police in a drive recovered three firearms and four crude bombs from a pick-up van on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Bathuli in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district early Friday. Mohamamd Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of highway police, said noticing suspicious movement of a pick-up van, a team of police challenged the vehicle in Noyadingi area at about 3:00 am. Later police caught the pick-up van at Bathuli and recovered a pipe gun, two pistols, eight rounds of bullet, two sharp weapons and four crude bombs from the vehicle. However, police could not arrest anyone as the driver along with 5/6 men managed to flee leaving behind the vehicle in the area, reports UNB.

Jute gutted in Manikganj fire

MANIKGANJ: Abut 1,200 maunds of jute were gutted by a fire that broke out at a jute warehouse at Charigram village in Singair upazila on Thursday. Witnesses said the fire erupted at a tin-shed jute warehouse at about 1:00 pm and spread soon. Being informed, fire fighting units rushed in and doused the flame after one hour of frantic efforts. However, no causality was reported, reports UNB.

Life term for killing wife
SIRAJGANJ:A court here on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) for killing his wife in 2008. The convict was identified as Abul Kashem Fakir, 48, son of late Bux Fakir of Solongi village in Chouhali upazila. The court also fined the convict Tk5,000, in default to suffer three months more in jail. According to the prosecution, Rowshan Ara, 28, wife of Abul Kashem was beaten to death by her husband Kashem Fakir on July 15, 2008. Later Nur Hossain, father of the victim, filed a case in this connection. After examining records and witnesses, Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Abdus Salek handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
