BAUJA gets new body

A fifteen-member executive committee of Bangladesh Agricultural University Journalist’ Association (BAUJA) was formed for a period of one year. Md. Hatem Ali of Daily New Age and Ahad Alam of Samakal elected as president and general secretary respectively. Other members of the committee are S.M Ashiful Islam of daily Jugantor as Vice-president Ariful Ialam of Nayadiganto as joint secretary, Md. Yousuf Ali of Alokito Bangladesh as Organizing Secretary, Mofazzal Hossain of Janakantho as treasurer, Mahdi Hasan of Daily Sun as Office secretary, Najib Mubin of Ittefaq as Press and publication secretary, Musfiqur Rahman Sifat of Daily Amader Somoy as Information and Technology Secretary and Md Auwal Mia of Daily Sangbad as Sports and Cultural secretary. Amit Malakar of Banglamail24.com, Shaheeduzzaman Sagor of Prothom Alo and Ayaz Billah of Shokaler Khobar were selected as members of the committee. Former president Imrul Kaes Mirza Kiran of The Independent and Md. Ashraful Alam of Daily Inqilab were selected as executive members of the newly formed committee.
SCC removes 1,000 illegal billboards in Sylhet

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) removed over a thousand illegal billboards, out of 5,000, from the roadsides of the city in the last three days ahead of the T20 matches start in Sylhet on March 17. There are about 1,000 approved billboards set up in the city, said SCC chief engineer Nur Azizur Rahman yesterday. However, Kamal Ansari, owner of advertising firm Anupras, said ‘genuine’ firms are deprived of doing business due to the illegal billboards. He urged the SCC authorities to give opportunity to the ‘real’ firms to set up billboards.
‘Seba Kutir’set up in Sylhet land office

A new service centre called ‘Seba Kutir’ has been set up at the Sylhet land office to smoke out touts who harass service-seekers unless they pay up. Some claim this land office is the face of ‘changing Sylhet’. Locals are able to directly connect to officials and secure the service they need, without having to worry about touts who hang around such offices, looking to harass and intimidate service-seekers unless they cough out a fat bribe. On Monday afternoon, Additional Commissioner (Land) Mohammed Suhel Mahmud was found handling queries from service-seekers directly. He said since the ‘Seba Kutir’ (literally Service Centre) was set up in October last year, it handles queries from up to 100 service-seeker for two hours after 10am and guides them to the right desk for solutions. “I tell them ways to quickly get their problems solved.
Traditional fish fair held in Habiganj
HABIGANJ: A day-long traditional fish fair was held at Poli village of the Sadar upazila of the district on Friday. Hundreds of fish sellers and buyers and curious people from Habiganj ,Moulvibazar, Sylhet, Sunamgang, Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria districts joined the 100-year old traditional fish fair yesterday. Different species of indigenous fish like boal, baghaire, chital, gozar, shol, rohi, katal, puthi, chingri, koi, chapila and chanda were put on display at the fair. A baghaire fish weighing 40 kilograms was sold at Taka 50,000 and a boal at Taka 10,000 during the fair, said Shaheb Ali, one of the organizers of the fair. Shaheb Ali is also chairman of Poil Union Parishad, reports BSS.
