Paturia-Daulatdia ferry services resume after 3 hrs

Ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route in the Padma River resumed on Wednesday morning after three hours of disruption caused by dense fog. Mahiuddin Rasel, manager (Commercial) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha, said they kept suspended ferry services and plying of the water vessels from 7:00am to 10:05am due to blurred visibility for dense fog. Four ferries lay motionless in the middle of the Padma. Seven ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers on board lay anchored at Paturia and four ferries at Daulatdia. Passengers suffered as a good number of vehicles had to be kept waiting on both sides of the river for crossing. Ferry services on the important route resumed around 10:05 am as fog started disappearing with the sunrise.
Freshers’ orientation held at SUST

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) held an orientation programme for the newly -enrolled students of 2015-16 session at its central auditorium on the campus on Sunday. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was present as Chief Guest while Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, VC of the university presided over. The welcome speech was given by Prof Dr Mushtaq Ahmed, Member Secretary of SUST Admission Committee. SUST VC handed over a crest to the Education Minister in the programme. Treasurer Prof Ilias Uddin Biswas, Senior Prof Rezaul Karim Khandaker, Prof Kamal Ahmed and ex-law maker Safiqur Rahman Chowdhury were present as special guest .
38 people held on various charges
Police in a drive from Saturday midnight to Sunday morning arrested 38 people from different places of the district on various charges. Sources said, police conducted separate drives in 11 upazilas of the district. Officer-In-Charge of Sadar Police Station Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the incident.
Nat’l debate contest SUST today
A three-day National Debate competition will begin at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) campus on January 14.SUST School of Debate , a debate organisation of the university, will arrange the event for the first time. A total of 24 teams from 21 public and private universities including DU, RU, CU, JU and NSU, will take part in this competition, said Sabah Mahzabin, president of SUST-SD, at a press conference at SUST Press Club office on Saturday. The prize- giving ceremony of the debate competition will be held January 16.
23 held on Benapole border
BENAPOLE: Members of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) arrested 23 people, including 13 women, from Doulatpur border point early Wednesday foiling their bid to enter India illegally. Subedar Aiyub Ali of Benapole camp of 26 BGB Battalion said being tipped of that some Bangladeshi citizens were trying to enter Indian territory through Doulatpur border point without any valid documents, a team of BGB personnel conducted a drive there and arrested 13 women and 10 men. The arrestees hail from Jessore, Barisal and Narail district. A case was filed with Benapole Port Police Station in connection with the incident, reports UNB.
