BNP infighting in Sunamganj leaves 15 injured
SUNAMGANJ: At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two factions of BNP over observing the founding anniversary Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in Dharmapasha upazila headquarters here on Friday. Sources said the supporters of Abdul Motalik, upazila chairman and a local Chhatra Dal leader, brought out a procession around 11:30 am, marking the founding anniversary of JCD. When the procession reached Purba Bazar area, the supporters of BNP central committee member Rafique Chowdhury swooped on the procession , triggering a clash that left 15 people from both sides injured. The injured were rushed to Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex. On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control, said Golam Kibria, officer-in-charge of Dharmapasha Police Station, reports UNB.
4 BNP men held in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: Police in a drive arrested four leaders and activists of BNP, including the general secretary of the party’s district unit, from in front of the local press club in Sadar upazila on Friday. The general secretary was identified as Abdul Alim. Emdadul Haq, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said police arrested the four BNP men while they were going to attend a view exchange meeting of the mayor-elect, Tajkin Ahmed, at the press club around 10:45 am. Abu Jahid Dablu, president of district unit Krishak Dal, was also among the arrestees. All the arrestees were accused in several cases, said the OC, reports UNB.
Tractor set afire in Dinajpur
DINAJPUR: Miscreants set fire to a tractor at Bhabanishah in Sadar upazila early Friday. Locals said a group of miscreants set fire to a Thakurgaon-bound quilt and cotton-laden tractor from Chapainawabganj around 5:30 am and managed to flee the scene. On information, a firefighting unit rushed in and extinguished the blaze, said assistant director of Dinajpur Fire Service Station Anisur Rahman. However, none was injured as the driver and helper of the tractor were taking rest after keeping their vehicle on the roadside. The fire burnt valuables worth Tk3 lakh, said Anisur Rahman, reports UNB.
Girl commits suicide for PEC failure in Munshiganj
MUNSHIGANJ: A girl who failed in the Primary Education Completion (PEC) examination allegedly committed suicide on Thursday at Champakdi village in Sirajdikhan upazila as she could not bear the pain of the failure. The deceased was identified as Rahima Akter, 14, daughter of Ayub Ali Sheikh, a resident of the village. Police, quoting locals, said Rahima, had appeared at the PEC examinations from a local school of Kathaltoli. After getting her results on the day she became upset and killed herself by hanging herself from the ceiling of the house around 11:30 pm. Duty officer of Sirajdikhan Police Station Mamun Hossain Mollah confirmed the incident, reports UNB.
Timber, jatka seized in Barguna
BARGUNA: The members of the Coastguard in two separate drives seized a Sundari timber loaded trawler and 12-maund jatka from Baleshwar river at Pokhidia point under Pathargata upazila of the district on Thursday. Acting on a tip- off, the members of the Coastguard conducted a drive in Pokhidia area near Sundarban and seized 200 cubic feet Sundari timber from an engine driven trawler, Coastguard Pathargata Station Commander Lieutenant SA Rouf said. In another drive the Coastguard also seized 12 maunds of jatka ( small hilsa fish) from a fishing boat in the same area. The seized timber and trawler were handed over to Forest Department, the commander said. Nobody was arrested in these connections. The seized jatka were distributed among the poor of the area. The employees and fishermen of the trawler and boat fled from the scene sensing the presence of members of the Coastguard, the sources added, reports BSS.
