China, Africa vow to solve crises

Fifty African countries and China wrapped up a landmark summit on Saturday vowing to push for homegrown solutions to solve Africa’s peace and security woes.
The leaders met for what South African President Jacob Zuma dubbed “historic” talks, aimed at bolstering ties between the continent and its major trading partner.

Airport reopens in flood-hit Chennai

India’s main airport in flood-devastated Tamil Nadu state reopened on Sunday as emergency workers strove to help thousands of residents forced to flee their inundated homes.
The international airport in the state capital Chennai had closed on Wednesday leaving thousands of passengers stranded, after record rains worsened flooding that has claimed nearly 300 lives since November 9.

Chinese fugitive returns from US

One of China’s most wanted fugitives voluntarily returned from the U.S. on Saturday in a new victory for the government’s campaign to track down corruption suspects who have fled abroad, the ruling Communist Party said.
The party’s anti-graft body said that Huang Yurong had turned herself at Beijing’s Capital Airport.

Syria talks will take place in New York

Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday the next round of talks on the Syrian crisis would take place in New York later this month.
“The governments involved are going to meet later in this month in New York in order to continue to move this process forward,” Kerry said in a speech to the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Heavy smog blankets China

Heavy smog yesterday returned to blanket China partially as it is expected to cause high-level air pollution in coming days, forcing schools to suspend outdoor activities.
Medium to heavy smog will hit parts of Beijing-Tianjin- Hebei on Tuesday and Wednesday, though it would not be as severe as the air pollution earlier this week, the National Meteorological Centre (NMC) said.
