One killed in road mishap in C’ nawabganj

One person was killed as he was run over by a truck at Boiltala on the Chapainawabganj-Sonamasjid highway on Wednesday night. The victim was identified as Mamun Ali, 32, son of Abdul Mannan of Nayalabhanga under Shibganj upazila of the district. Police said, Mamun was returning home from Chapainawabganj by a motor cycle and as he reached Boiltala under Shibganj upazila at around 7-30 pm, a goods laden truck hailing from Sonamasjid crushed him under its wheels. He died on the spot. Being informed, police from Shibganj thana recovered the dead body but the killer truck fled away, the sources added.
Bhai Phonta festival observed in Barisal

‘Bhai Phonta’, the family festival of Hindu community, observed on Friday afternoon to night in the city with great enthusiasm. ‘Bhai Phonta or Vai Phota’ holds a very important place in Bengali Hindu culture. Sisters usually consider it to be the most important event of the year. In the festival usually celebrated two days after the Kali Puja, the sisters mark the foreheads of their brothers with sandalwood paste and pray for their safety, well being and success. About the origin of the festival, journalist Sushanta Ghosh said according to Rig Veda, Yama and Yamuna were twins (brother and sister) born to Surya. In their earthly incarnations, Yamuna once longed to see her brother and invited Yama to her house. When Yama, the god of death visited his sister, his sister prayed for his well being. The other legends regarding the origin connect Vishnu, Krishna and Mahavira.
Ulema League leader sent to jail over Sayeed murder

A Sylhet Court on Tuesday sent Ulema League publicity secretary Muhib Hossian to jail in connection with nine-year school boy Abu Sayeed murder case upon his surrender. Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Abdur Rashid passed the order rejecting his bail prayer, said Special PP Abdul Malek confirmed the matter. Earlier on Sunday, the court issued warrant against Muhib Hossain in this case. The body of Abu Sayeed, a class IV student of Shah Mir Government Primary School and son of Matin Mia of Darji Bandha Bashurdara in city, was recovered from the house of police constable Abadur Rahman at Jharnarpar area in the city on March 14.
