School student commits suicide in Barisal

A school student committed suicide by hanging himself from roof on Monday night. The victim was identified as Al-Amin, 17, student of class-X at Technical Training Center (TTC) and only son of Mantu Mia from Khan Sarak in Baganbari area under ward-13 of Barisal City Corporation. Police recovering the dead body on early Tuesday sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy lodging a case of unnatural death, said Sub Inspector Saidul Islam of Barisal Kotwali police station. Family sources said Al-Amin earlier also attempted suicide demanding motorcycle and after treatment at hospital got the vehicle.

Free electricity connection fair held in Manikganj

Manikganj Pally Bidyut Somity (PBS) arranged free electricity connection fair at Nihalpur under Shibalaya upazila in Manikganj on Wednesday. The fair was arranged under the direction of Manigkanj PBS Senior General Manager Md. Obaydur Rahman. Businessman Social worker Md. Raju Ahmed inaugurated the fair. Manikganj PBS AGM (MS) Md. Ashraf Hossain, Power Use Coordinator Abdul Mannan, Accountant Md. Shahjahan Ali, Wearing Inspector Dewan Md. Farid, among others, was present at the fair. 200 families of Narayan Teota, Nihalpur, Shibalaya, and Boyali of the upazila got free connections applying presently. Users have to spend only Tk 620 for purchasing meter. About 1000 connections will be given in the upazila in a week. New users of electricity are very happy getting free connection in a day.

Woman crushed under train

A woman was crashed under wheels of a local train at Harespur area in Madhabpur upazila of the district on Friday morning. The deceased was Rahima Khatun, 25, daughter of Alai Miah of Jamalpur village of the upazila. Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue. In charge of Shaestaganj Railway police Abul Kashem confirmed the incident.

Sylhet Mohila Dal celebrates Khaleda’s birthday

Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal Sylhet City celebrated BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s 70th birthday by cutting a cake on Saturday afternoon. Leaders and activists of the Mohila Dal, BNP’s women wing, cut the cake at party Central Joint Secretary and Sylhet City president Professor Samiya Begum Chowdhury Sylhet Office. A munajat was also offered there seeking long life of the BNP chief. It was the only programme on Saturday to mark Khaleda’s birthday.
Unlike previous years, Party sources said Sylhet city BNP, different associate bodies of the party, including Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal, are set to wish Khaleda happy birthday with flowers and cut cakes at the BNP chief’s.

T-Aus paddy harvest completed in Gaibandha

Harvesting of T-Aus paddy of the current season has been completed in the district in the first week of the current month amid much enthusiasm. A total of 1,296 hectares of land were brought under T-Aus paddy farming in the district during the current season with the production target of 3,234 tonnes of rice. Of the total, some 120 hectares of land were cultivated in Sadar upazila, 10 in Sadullapur and Palashbari upazila each, 250 in Gobindaganj upazila, 306 in Sundarganj upazila, 20 in Shaghata upazila and 580 in Fulchhari upazila. M. Ranju Miah, a farmer of Barmatat village under Lakkhipur union of Sadar upazila, said by cultivating T-Aus variety on two bighas of land during the current season he got good returns.
