 Humayun Ahmed’s 3rd death anniv observed in Gouripur

The third death anniversary of noted littérateur, filmmaker, TV playwright-director Humayun Ahmed was observed in Gouripur Upazila of Mymensingh district in a befitting manner on Sunday. Katha Sahityik Humayun Ahmed Smriti Parishad and his fans chalked out elaborate programmes marking his death anniversary. On Sunday afternoon, Katha Sahityik Humayun Ahmed Smriti Parishad organised a human chain at Gouripur Railway Junction platform to urge everyone, including the government and Humayun’ family to make Humayun’s memorial foundation there because Humayun Ahmed wrote a novel named ‘Gouripur Junction’ around the station when he made a trip to his maternal house at Mohanganj by train. The human chain was also led by Mutalib Bin Ayet, Majharul Islam Palash, Mohammad Raihan Uddin Sarker, Md Mojibur Rahman, Rakibul Islam Rakib, Jahirul Huda Liton, Pijosh Roy Ganesh, Shamima Khanam Mina, Farzia Afrin, Swapon Kumar Ghos, Ali Bhuiyan Raju and addressed the occasion as organisers. Humayun Ahmed authored around 200 books of fiction and non-fiction and directed 15 films. His writing included novels, short stories, an autobiography and columns in different newspapers. Humayun Ahmed was born on November 13, 1948 at Kutubpur village of Netrokona district.

Ratha Yatra celebrated in Bagerhat

Members of Hindu community began to celebrate Ratha Yatra, one of their major religious festivals on Saturday. The main Ratha Yatra programme was organised at Laupala within Baraipara Union Parishad under Sadar Upazila in Bagerhat district. The main Journey of Jgannath Dev was brought out from more than 250 years old Sree Sree Gopal Jiew temple at Laupala to its front place with a festive mood on Saturday after noon. Thousand of Hindu community members including female and children joined in pulling the Ratha (Chariot) by long ropes. The participants attired in traditional Hindu custom beat drums and played other musical instruments. A large number of onlookers’ of various creeds and cast were seen around the Ratha. Apart of the festival, a big fair locally known as Rather Mela was held around the Ratha. It will continue for long one month with participation of a large number of stalls displaying various traditional and handicraft items like furniture, utensils, baby toys and sweetmeats. Various physical displays are being shown by a circus party in the fair.

Hospital inaugurated in Daudkandi

A 30- bed specialty Hospital Eliotgonj Apollo Hospital and Diagnostic center was inaugurated at Eliotgonj in Daudkandi Upazila on Tuesday. Badol Roy Bangladesh Awami League Central Sub-Committee Co-Editor and Bangladesh Football Federation vice-president in chair. Professor Dr. Pran Gopal Datta, Bangabandhu Seikh Mujib Medical University’s former Vice chancellor was present as the Chief Guest. Mejor (Retd) Mohammad Ali Chairman Daudkandi Upazila Porishad, Md Abu Salalm Miah Officer- in-charge Daudkandi Police station was present as the special guest. Md. Habibur Rahman Habib President Daudkandi Press Club, Muhitul islam Fakir former president Eliotgonj Rajendra-Bishawnath School, Md. Salim Headmaster Gouripur S.A High School, Mamunur Rashid Former Chairman Eliotgonj Union Parishad spoke among others.

BAU extends Eid vacation by one week

The authority of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has declared the Eid vacation one week earlier as the authority suspects a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of BAU unit and local villegers. The vacation starts from Monday and continue till July 23. Classes and examinations will resume from on July 26 as July 24 and 25 were Friday and Saturday, confirmed BAU registrar Abdul Khaleque.
