Experts for more cultivation of zinc-enriched rice

Enhanced cultivation of zinc-enriched rice ensures food and nutrition security preventing deficiency of zinc, iron and vitamin-A for normal growth of the children and increasing disease resistant capacity, experts said on Thursday. The programme was organised by Agriculture Extension Department (Harvest Plus), under CIAT-IFPRY under International Paddy Research Institute (IRRI) Project and financial assistance by AIHD. They were addressing a farmers’ field day organised by Department Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Pabna, a leading NGO, to demonstrate farming results, technologies and harvesting high zinc enriched variety BRRI dhan-64 rice at Shariasha village under Santhia upazila and Bhaina village in Sujanagar upazila of the district. Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture (DAE) for Pabna Bibhuti Bhushon Sarkar attended the occasion and inaugurated harvest of the high yielding zinc-enriched BRRI dhan-64 rice at the field as the chief guest. Among others Additional DAE Lolman Hossain, agriculturalist officer Ranjana Kumar Pramanik, ARDO’s officer in Kushita Saiful Islam, Rafiqul Islam Milon, executive Director of AIHD were present on the occasion. Over 250 local farmers attended the programme.
School banking fair held in Barisal

 A day-long school banking account opening programme and fair was held in Barisal on Saturday. More than hundred million taka was deposited by 30 thousand students of southern region after starting this system since last two-year, it was said in the fair. The programme organised by Bangladesh Bank at its branch premises in the city was presided over by Muhammad Nazim Uddin, head of green banking and CSR department of BB and welcomed by Nurul Alam Kazi, general manger of BB Barisal branch.Total thirty seven schools and thirty-seven scheduled banks of the region participating in the fair. Among others Selina Hossain, director Shishu Academy, was chief guest of the inaugural function of the programme addressed among others by Debashish Chakraborty, deputy managing director of Rupali Bank, Mahfuzur Rahman and M. Nazimuddin, executive directors of BB.
Alleged dacoit lynched in Hizla
An alleged dacoit lynched by local people at remote Ekota Bazaar Kheya Ghat area of Hizla of Barisal on Saturday night.
Golam Sarwar, Hizla police station officer in charge, said the victim was identified as Yusuf Sardar, 35, a leader of inter-district dacoit gang and son of Malek Sardar from Khunna-Govindapur area of Hizla. Police after recovering dead body of Yusuf sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital on Sunday for autopsy lodging two cases of attempting dacoity and killing by lynching. Police also seized the trawler used for carrying the alleged dacoit gang with some sharp weapons. Police claimed that lynched Yusuf Sardar was accused in several cases of daocity with this police station. Police told dacoit gang with sharp and lethal weapons reached at Ekota Bazaar Kheya Ghat area on trawler at about 8:30 PM Saturday. Then panic of dacoity spread in the area and more than 200 local people assembled to resist the dacoit gang and chased the suspected criminals. Associates of Yusuf jumping from the trawler succeeded to flee from the scene by swimming, but Yusuf was nabbed by local people and lynched at about 9:00 PM Saturday.
