Rabindra Joyonti observed in Barisal city

 The 154th birth anniversary of Bishwakobi Rabindranath Tagore (Rabindra Joyantee) was observed in Barisal city on Friday showing deep respect to the great poet of Bengali language and literature and calling properly exercise the creation and ideals of the poet.
Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilon Parishad organised a day-long programme including Provatee Rabi Bandona, cultural function, recitation and dance competition at Amrita Lal Dey College premises from the morning. Prof. Ziaul Haque, chairman Barisal Education Board inaugurated the program as the chief guest. The programme in different sessions was addressed among others by Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner Barisal, Nikhil Sen, Mir Mujtaba Ali, Nazrul Islam Chunnu, Mukul Das, Kajal Ghose, Shamima Masud Munni and other cultural, intellectual activists. Different educational cultural institutions, cultural organizations including SCGM School, Udichi, Barisal Natak Abriti Proshikkhan Kendra, Kheyali and Shabdaboli Group Theatre, Nattyam, Prantik, Tansen arranged day-long elaborate programs on this occasion. The programmes included presenting songs, poems, dances and dramas of Tagore, discussion meetings, and poem and dance competitions, prize giving ceremonies. The speakers and participants of the programs said Rabindranath was an extraordinary talent and would inspire the new generations’ years after years. He is a “lighthouse” for the Bengalis. Main themes of Tagore’s works were worship of truth and beauty and expansion of values of the humanity. He was a source of inspiration in all movements, struggles, revolutions, thoughts and creativity of the Bengali nation, they said.

College student ‘commits suicide’ in Sylhet

A college student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in Akhalia Hawlader Para area of the city on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Hassan Ahmed, 21, son of Abdul Karim, a resident of Kazirgoan village in Bishwanath upazila and a student of the Sociology Department of Sylhet MC College. Police said Hassan committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in a house in the area around 9pm. On information, police recovered the body. Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police station, confirmed the incidentAn unnatural death case was filed in this connection.

One held with 77 pieces of Yaba

RAB arrested an alleged drug peddler along with 77 Pieces Yaba from Kodomtoly on the Dakshin Surma on Wednesday Night. The arrestee was identified as Mizanur Rahman, son of Abdul Hamid, a resident of Solman pur area in Chatak upazila of Sunamgong district. RAB said on a tip-off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area and intercepted a Jomuna Resturant in the Night. Later, they recovered 77 Pieces Yaba and arrested Mizan. A case was filed in this connection.

Hospital vandalised over patient’s death in Laxmipur

LAXMIPUR: Angry relatives vandalised a hospital in the district town and assaulted its three staff following death of a patient for alleged negligence of treatment here early Friday. The deceased was identified as Lipi Akter, wife of Firoz Alam of Banchanagar village in Laxmipur municipality area. Abdul Karim, in-charge of the town police camp, said relatives of Lipi Akter got her admitted to Model Hospital in the town as she had labour pain three days back. After some tests were conducted, the patient was taken to the caesarean section in the dead of night.
After sometime, the patient died in the hospital in the wee hours of Friday. Outraged by the death, relatives of the patient vandalised the hospital’s furniture and beat up Taslim, Jamal and Shafiullah, leaving them injured. They also demanded fair investigation into the incident. On information, police rushed in and arrested three people in this connection, reports UNB
