8 houses burnt in Sunamganj

Eight houses were gutted by a fire that broke out at Pashchim Hajipara in the district town on Friday night. Witnesses said the fire originated from a kitchen stove at a house in the area at about 8:00 pm and it soon engulfed the other adjoining houses. On information, two fire fighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after one hour of frantic efforts with the help of local people. Affected house owners said that the extent of loss could go up to taka a few lakhs.
3 held with fake currency notes in Sylhet
Police arrested three people including two women in possession of 16 fake currency notes worth Tk16,000 from Jaflong Bazar in Goainghat upazila on Friday. The arrestees were identified as Suhel Ahmad,35, son of Tabir Ali, a resident of Bhangakhuti village in Bianibazar upazila of Sylhet district and Rojina Begum,25, daughter of late Siddik Miah of Dharpara village and Suma Akter,18, daughter of Dulal Miah, a resident of Baraitala village in Kendua upazila of Netrakona district. Sub-inspector of Goainghat Police Station Arif said on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the trio in the afternoon.
Poura councillor injured in Bogra

A municipality councilor was injured in a police firing when he was trying to flee from police custody at Chhotokumiray village nearby central Charmatha area under Sadar Upazila of Bogra on early Sunday. The injured is identified as Masud Rana alias Masud, 40, a Jubo Dal president and councilor of ward number15 of the municipality. Officer-in-charge of Sadar police station Abul Basher said that on a tip-off a team of police arrested Masud from his relative’s house around 2.45 am. Later, police conducted a drive at Jahurul Nagar area along-with Masud where they recovered a local pipe gun, 2 bullets and 22 cocktails arms. At one stage of drive Masud was trying to flee from their custody and the team fired Masud, leave him seriously injured. Police admitted bullet-hit Masud to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital where he was admitted for better treatment. He is an accused of 38 cases, police said.
May Day observed in Kishoreganj

The historic May Day was observed in Kishoreganj on Friday . The day was chosen to be International workers Day in order to commemorate the May 4, 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago City. Kishoreganj District Administration and different trade organizations, political parties, Labour Union arranged colourfull rallies, discussion meeting, seminar, documentary film and cultural function marking the day. A discussion meeting, organised by District Administration held at Local Art Council hall in the town on Friday morning.
Deputy Commissioner S.M. Alam presided over the discussion. It was addressed among others by Police Super Md. Anwar Hossain Khan, ADC (Gen) Md. Jamil Ahmed, District Awami League General Secretary Adv. M.A. Afzal, transport leader Kanchan Miah, Adv Nazmul Islam Jowel.
