Falling plaster from roof of hostel panicked students

Falling plaster from roof of room no.303 at second floor of Habibur Rahman Students Hostel at Barisal Sher- e- Bangla Medical College panicked residential medical students on Wednesday. Rana, a student of the room, said the plaster fall from the roof top of the room at about 9:30 PM Tuesday night. The panicked students feeling it as a result of earthquake-hit, went out of the room, but later found it caused from dilapidated condition of the about thirty-year old hostel building, Rana added. About 3-month ago, plaster fall down from roof-top of the balcony at ground floor of another hostel in SBMC, students told. After informed by the students, Dr. Vaskar Saha, principal SBMC, visited the spot on Wednesday morning. He asked public works department to inspect the SBMC structures and repair the faults immediately. Earlier the college was declared closed on February 10, 2015 and reopened on March 21 after piling works of under construction new hostel building for girl-students endangered adjacent 5-storied old girl-hostel building creating crack and falling plasters from roof top, principal of SBMC said. Md. Selim, PWD sub-divisional engineer in charge of SBMCH, said he also visiting the spot wrote letter to higher authority for immediate repairing of the SBMC buildings.

One held along with 10 kgs venison in Mongla

 Coast Guards of the Western Zone deployed at Mongla arrested one Nikhil Chandra along with 10 kgs venison (flesh of deer) from Digraj bazar under Mongla Upazila in the district on Wednesday noon. Sources said, on a secret information a contingent of the Coastguards of the Western Zone raided Digrfaj bazar at 12 am and arrested Nikhil Chandra and recovered the venison from his possession. Later, he was handed over to Upazila mobile court. The court convicted him and sentenced him to suffer simple imprisonment for 2 months on the charge of possessing flesh of deer. Nikhil Chandra hailed from the village Bairagkhali under Monla Upazila.

Five held with wine, Yaba in Sylhet

Five persons were held with 15 liters of wine and 180 pieces of Yaba pills from Goinghat upazila under Sylhet district and Sutabazar area of Habiganj district early Saturday.
Members of Rapid Action Battalion-9 (RAB), Detective Branch (DB) of Sylhet police and Goinghat Thana police held them in separate drives. The arrestees were identified as Alim Uddin, 50, son of late Sayesta Khan, Nazrul Alam, 20, son of Harun-ur-Rashid, Bellal Ahmed, 21, son of late Mahmud Ali, Alamgir Hossain, 40, son of Iqbal Hossain and Rubel Chardra Pal, 25, son of Poresh Chandra Pal. Sources concerned said that the Goinghat Thana police held Alim Uddin with 15 liters of wine from Muhammadpur area while DB held Nazrul Alam and Bellal Ahmed with 15 pieces of Yaba from Salutikar area and RAB held Alamgir Hossain and Rubel Chardra Pal with 180 pieces of Yaba from Sutabazar area of Habiganj district.

4 wounded as smugglers swooped on villagers at Benapole

At least four villagers were wounded in a terrorist attack allegedly carried by a group of smugglers at Sadipur village under Benapole port police station on Monday night. The wounded Jasim Uddin, Lovelu, Miaraj and Mehedi Hasan, residents of Sadipur village under Benapole port police station were rushed to private clinics at Benapole. Referring to villagers, sub inspector Deen Mohammad told that at least four villagers of Sadipur were wounded as a number of smugglers led by Selim, Alauddin, Ilias and Firoj of Bhaberber village swooped on them as the light of a torch fell on them while the villagers were guarding a mango grove at around 10 pm on Monday. Apurba Hasan, officer in-charge, Benapole port police station confirmed the information.

BNP -backed panel sweeps RU Officers Assoc polls

BNP- backed Moshiul Alam-Nazrul Islam panel swept over Rajshahi University Officers’ Association election held on campus on Saturday. BNP- backed panel got 15 out of 19 posts against Pro-Awami League backed Tobibur Rahman-Kamruzzaman Chanchal panel. On Saturday, votes were casted from 8:00am to 2:00pm while Ziaul Alam, election commissioner declared the result in the evening. Moshiul Alam Hossain and AKM Nazrul Islam alias Sheli were elected as president and general secretary respectively. The other office bearers from BNP backed panel are—vice president M Jaidur Rahman, organizing secretary Bazlur Rashid, joint secretary Jakirul Islam, office secretary Mokhter Hossain, publicity secretary Syed Abu Rashed Md Bokhtiar Ali, cultural secretary Mojibur Rahman, social welfare and sport affairs secretary Dr. Habiba Haider and 6 other members. Pro-AL backed Muktadir Hossain Rahi was elected as treasurer while Dr Golam Mostofa, Rabbel Hossain and Hasin Ahmed were elected as member.
