RU teachers protest attack on Khaleda’s motorcade

Pro-BNP and Jamaat-backed teachers and staff of Rajshahi University yesterday protested the attack on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during her election campaign. They also demanded exemplary punishment to pro-ruling Awami League leaders and activists who made attack. On April 20 and 21, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack by pro-ruling Awami League activists during her election campaign at capital. Over hundred teachers and staffs who believed on ‘Jatiyatabad and Islamic Values’ brought out a procession on campus at 11:30am and joined at a rally at the university administrative building premises after parading the main streets of the campus. Among others, Prof Rafiqul Islam, former VC of Islamic University, Prof Dr Sahadat Hossain Mandol, former Pro-VC of RU and Prof Dr M Azhar Ali, former Rajshahi University Teachers Association president spoke at rally. Speakers at rally said, such heinous attack by pro-AL leaders and activists on country’s opposition leader’s motorcade during the election campaign is grave threat to democracy.
“The attack was made following the order of the government”, they alleged. They also demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the involved pro-AL leaders and activists.
Top terrorist held with pistol in Sylhet

Police arrested an alleged top terrorist in possession of a pistol from Sheikhghat area in the city on Saturday evening. The arrestee was identified as Tiger Jamal. Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Sohel Ahmad said on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in Kalapara Betpali area and arrested Jamal at about 7:00 pm. Later, the law enforcers also recovered a pistol from his possession.The arrestee was accused in two murder cases, the OC added.
Vitamin A Plus campaign starts
Director of health Dipartment (Administration) Dr Ahtesamul haque Chowdhury called for ensuring good health of children for building up a prosperous Bangladesh.
He said this while inaugurating Vitamin A plus campaigning as the chief guest at a health center on Saturday here. Facilitating the volunteers and supervisors who involved in this service oriented programme, He reemphasized that mortality rate of both mothers and children has reduced after implementing these campaigns successfully. Among others, the programme was addressed by SCC Secratary Rajai Rafin Shorkar, Health Officer Dr Sudamoy mojumdar. At least 10,4052 children aged between six and 11 months were dosed blue-colored vitamin A capsule and 81,067 children aged between 12 and 59 months were fed a dosed red- colored vitamin A capsule in the campaigning.
A total of 630 volunteers under 210centers under 27 wards as well as 22 mobile teams in this regard.
Human chain demanding Jessore division

Citizens of greater Jessore district (Jessore, Jhenidah, Magura and Narail) on Saturday formed a human chain in front of Jessore Press Club to press the demand to declare the oldest district of undivided Bangla, the third municipality of the Indian sub continent and the first district of the war of liberation as a division. People of all walks of life including teachers, politicians, lawyers, journalists and cultural activists took part the chain with banners and festoons. Jessore Division Movement Committee arranged the programme on Saturday morning.
Two held with 2,581 bottles phensidyl in C’nawabganj

Two alleged drug smugglers were arrested with 2,581 bottles of phensidyl from a passenger bus at Kalupur under Shibganj Upazila in Chapainawabganj on Wednesday morning. The arrested persons have been identified as Khaibur Rahman, 39, son of late Bazlur Rahman and Wahedur Rahman, 28, son of late Ashraful Islam both of Baharampur Hatatpara under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district. RAB said, acting on secret information, an operation team of RAB from Chapainawabganj camp detained a Dhaka bound passenger bus ‘Jatrisheba’ at around 7-30 am and after searching the bus RAB found the bottles of phensidyl. RAB also arrested Khaibur and Wahedur in this connection.
Housewife killed in Jessore

A housewife was tortured to kill allegedly by her husband at Lebutala under Jessore sadar upazila on Tuesday. She died at Jessore Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment. The dead was identified as Parvina Khatun, 30, wife of Momtaj Uddin of Lebutala village. Shikder Akkas Ali, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station told that the housewife died as the hospital after her husband Momtaj hit her with a piece of iron at afternoon. Momtaj went on hiding after the incident, the OC added.
