 Attack on Christian community , 14 injured in Barisal

A group of lawyers of Barisal District Bar Association on Saturday attacked Christian community people and injured 14 including 10 female while forming a human chain protesting construction of court building grabbing church property and violating environment laws by filling historical pond. The attackers forced Christian community people to take shelter inside the church and banners, placards, festoons and loud speakers of the human chain were snatched. The attack were led by Advocate Jahangir Hossain, AL leader and former president, Advocate Mamun, Advocate Enayet and other members of district Bar Association about 10:40 AM Saturday. Irani Bepari, Manju Baroi, Sima Biswas, Maria Biswas, Ava Haldar, Shefali Boiragi, Sandhya Majumdar, Lila Bala, Alo Haldar, Paul, Shudhir Hajra,Robin Mandal, from Christian community and Saiful Islam , a local journalist, were injured in the attack and treated at local pharmacies and clinics.Police rushed to the spot rescued the Christian community people from the church and escorted them to form human chain in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall at about 11:10 AM, said Shakhawat Hossain, Kotwali police station officer in charge.

Shrimp pollen recovered from trucks
A team of river-police of Barisal metropolitan police recovered 8 lakhs shrimp pollen (Renu Pona) worth Tk 15 lakhs from two trucks loaded on Arial Kha river crossing ferry at Mirganj under Babuganj upazila of Barisal at about 3:00 am on Friday. Police brought the shrimp pollen laden two trucks ( bearing numbers- Dhaka-Metro-T- 16-4953 and Khulma -Metro-Ta-11-1048) with drivers to Barisal on Friday morning, said Sub Inspector Nazrul Islam, in charge of the Barisal river-police post. The drivers acknowledged that they carrying the seized shrimp pollen from Daulat Khan of Bhola and going to supply those for shrimp culivators of Khulna and Bagerhut districts. Then a mobile court formed by Sitesh Chandra Sarkar, administrative magistrate of Barisal at 11:00 AM Friday, ordered Sheikh Russel and Abdul Jabbar, drivers of the trucks to pay fine Tk 1,500 each and release the recovered poleen into rivers. Later the recovered pollen were released on Kirtankhola River at D C Ghat area of Barisal 12:30 PM , the police officer said Catching of shrimp pollen restricted by fishery act to boost open water fish wealth, said Barisal district fishery officer Wahiduzzaman.

Students vandalise 2 RU halls demanding electricity

Resident students of Shaheed Habibur Rahmanl and Shaheed Shamsuzzoha halls of Rajshahi University launched vandalism inside the hall on Tuesday night as electricity was not provided for last three days after storm hit on campus on April 4. A large number of trees were uprooted on campus by the storm which triggered the glitches of the electricity line.
Demanding immediate electricity service, around 9:00pm, more than a hundred resident students of Habibur Rahman hall started demonstration in front of hall provost’s room and vandalised the door and windows of the room. Around hundred Students of Shamsuzzoha hall also demonstrated in front of the residence of the hall provost at 8:30pm and threw stones. Students alleged that the university authority is very much indifferent to repair the electricity line immediately.

Cop killed in Jessore road accident

A police constable was killed and an official hurt in a road crash during an anti-smuggling drive at Dogachhia on Jessore- Chaugachha Road on Monday morning.
The dead is Ismail Hossain, 55, constable at Sajiali police camp under Kotwali police station in Jessore and son of Abdul Latif of Ramnagar village under Natore sadar upazila. Shikder Akkas Ali, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station told that the constable Ismail was rushed to Jessore Medical College Hospital after he was wounded critically being hit by smugglers. He died on way to Dhaka in the morning. ‘Assistant sub inspector Asad was also wounded in the incident’, the OC added.
