Properties worth Tk 10 lakh gutted in Morrelganj

Properties worth Tk10 lakh were gutted when a 2 storied tin -shed dwelling house caught fire in the village Barajamua within Chingrakhali Union under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat district in the early hours of Thursday, according to a report received here. The gutted house belonged to one Azim Khan and his four other brothers of the village. It is learnt from the members of the affected families and the locals that in the early hours at about 3 am when all the dwellers were sleeping in the house it caught the fire originated from an electricity short circuit took place in the house and within a short time it went out of control. Finding the fire all the inmates, somehow, managed to escape. But they could not save anything of the house. The inmates of the house and some locals tried their best to extinguish the fire, but in vain. As a result, all the belongings of the house including cash Taka 1.10 lakh, 2 vories gold ornaments and other valuables worth Tk.10 lakh were completely burnt into ashes. Consequently, all the members of five brothers were rendered homeless and they have been living a substandard life since the fire incident.

Couple held with drugs in Sarail

Khatihata Highway Police have arrested two drug dealers with 50 bottles of phensidyl in Sarail of Brahmanbaria district on Friday . The arrested are Sadek Mia, 29, and Mala Begum, 25, sons of late Juru Mia of Bishnupur village in Dharmaghar UP of Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district. Today, Friday, February 4, at around 8:30 am, under the direction of Khatihata Highway Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahjalal Alam, with the help of allied forces led by SI Ariful Alam Khan, on the basis of secret information, in front of Kuttapara BRAC Office in Sarail from Dhaka-Sylhet Highway. They were detained in a raid on a Dhaka-bound modern passenger bus. During the search, 50 bottles of phensidyl were recovered from their possession and they were arrested.

Punishment demanded for acid thrower

A human chain was formed at Manikganj Press Club premises on Friday demanding punishment for throwing acid on a woman garment worker in Saturia Upazila of Manikganj. The human chain was organized by Prothom Alo Manikganj Bandhusabha, social organization Dishari and Jagarani Kishore Club and Nagarik (Sujan) and Pragati Lekhak Sangha. Prothom Alo Manikganj Bandhusabha Vice-President Md Chan Mia presided over the program organized around 10:30 am to protest the incident and demand punishment of the accused. Journalist Jahangir Alam Biswas, Vice-President of Sujan’s District Branch and Advisor to Dishari, Prothom Alo Manikganj correspondent Abdul Momin, Prothom Alo Manikganj Bandhusabha advisor Bimal Roy, General Secretary Abdus Salam, member Ramzan Ali and Moushumi Akhter, Advisor to Dishari and Editor of Manikganj.
Joint General Secretary of the Council journalist Md. Akram Hossain, President of Dishari Hasan Sikder, General Secretary Md. Abul Hasanat, Joint General Secretary Md. Swapan Mia, Co-General Secretary Sham-Mim-JopaBrishti, President of Kishore Jagarani Club Md. Ashiquzzaman, Nazrul Islam, general secretary of the district committee of Pragati Writers Association. Speakers at the human chain strongly protested the incident and demanded maximum punishment for accused Naeem.
