Human chain formed in Sylhet

Teachers and students here formed a human chain on Tuesday demanding speedy trial and exemplary punishment to the killers of Abu Sayeed, a student of class four of Shah Mir Government Primary School in city.Madani Kafela Bangladesh formed the human chain at 5:30pm at in front of the Sylhet court point in city where several hundred took part. Speakers at the human chain said abductors dared to abduct Sayeed with the help of a police and demanded ransom. They also demanded speedy trial and exemplary punishment to the killers.Abu Sayeed, who went missing on 11 March, was recovered on March 14 dead.Moulana Tafazzul Hauqe Aziz, Moulana Ataur Rahman, Moulana Aslam Rahmani, Akhlak Ahmed Chowdury, M. Belal Ahmed Chowdury, Moulana Ruhul Amin Nogori, Moulana Saleh Ahmed Shabagi, Hafiz Shahed Ahmed Hatimi also spoke the human chain.
World TB Day observed
The World Tuberculosis Day-2015 was observed in Sylhet districts as elsewhere in the globe on Tuesday with much enthusiasm and in a befitting manner. This year the theme was “Reach the 3 Million: Reach, Treat, Cure Everyone”.A colourful rally and a discussion meeting, in this connection, were arranged here on Tuesday.The rally was brought out from the civil surgeon’s (CS) office on Tuesday morning and after parading the district town roads, ended at the same place.Later, district health department and BRAC organised a discussion meeting which was held at CS’s office. CS Dr. Azharul Islam presided over the discussion, while Director (health) Hori Podo Ray, Dr. Shahid Anwar, Dr. Nure Almam Shamim, Dr. Emdadul Haque spoke as special guests. Speakers in the meeting said tuberculosis is a curable disease and all affected could not be identified and brought under treatment. The speakers emphasised creating awareness about tuberculosis at grassroots-level and disseminate message through media.
1,050 bottles Phensidyl seized in Barisal
BARISAL: Members of the elite force RAB seized 1,050 bottles of banned phensidyl from a car at Kotwali thana area of the Barisal city and arrested one person in this connection yesterday. The Barisal city bound car (Dhaka Metro Kha-11-0747) from Jessore was intercepted at Gorachand Road of the city by the members of the Rapid Action Battalion-8 and found the phensidyls inside the vehicle. The driver of the car Babul Moral, 35, was arrested by the law enforcement agency.
A case was filed with Kotwali police station in this connection, report BSS.
Protection of ethnic community cultural heritage stressed
RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a ceremony here have said the cultural heritage of the ethnic communities must be protected from further degradation. They viewed the culture of the ethnic communities as heritage, resource and integral part of the society, so all quarters should take the responsibility to protect it. They were addressing the closing prize-giving ceremony of a day-long issue-based cultural competition for the ethnic children held at Rajshahi Divisional Ethnic Minorities Academy in the city yesterday afternoon. The Academy authority organized the competition to mark the 45th Independent and National Day-2015, where more than 100 children attended. Akter Jahan, MP, addressed the ceremony as chief guest while Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and President of Jatiya Adibashi Parishad Rabindranath Saren spoke as special guests with Shamim Akhter, Deputy Director of the academy, in the chair. The speakers viewed that cultural practices and other ancestral entertainment of the ethnic communities are gradually diminishing due to various reasons and called for protecting the cultural heritage from further degradation. Lawmaker Akter Jahan said she had been with the ethnic community people in the past and will remain with them in future also. She assured her cooperation for the development of the ethnic groups, report BSS.
Objective journalism stressed

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah yesterday urged the journalists to publish objective and constructive report in their respective media to lead the country towards development. “As the journalists are the conscience of the society, they have to work unitedly and sincerely for building the nation to attain the cherished goal of the country”, he said. Deputy speaker made the comments while addressing a view exchange meeting with the journalists of print and electronic media at Gaibandha Press Club of the town here on Thursday noon as the chief guest. With president of the GPC KM Rezaul Haque in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by adviser Gobinda Lal Das, Vice President Nuruzzaman Prodha, General Secretary Abu Zafar Sabu and office secretary Ariful Islam Babu. Mentioning a series of development activities being implemented and done in his constituency the deputy speaker sought cooperation of all the media men to focus development stories in the media to catch sight attention of the people. The deputy speaker also assured of his all sorts of help and assistance for overall development of the journalists here and the GPC so that the club could be turned into a welfare centre for the people.
