BGB seizes Indian low quality medicine in Jessore

Border Guard Bangladesh men on Monday seized a total of 56,900 pieces of Indian low quality medicine and 1,058 pieces of syringe carrying out separate raids at Dhanyakhola under Sharsha upazila and Kashipur under Chaugachha upazila in Jessore, said Lt Col Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, commanding officer, 26 Border Guard Battalion. The BGB Told New Nation that tipped off, the BGB men raided the said areas and seized sex stimulating and many other medicines and syringes at around 6am and 3pm on Monday. ‘Quality of the medicine is very poor,’ he added referring to physicians. The medicine was smuggled into Bangladesh through the frontiers, the border force official added. But nine was arrested in this connection.
3 businessmen jailed for selling current net

Three businessmen in the city on Monday afternoon jailed for selling current net in a drive of fishery department against catching and selling fish fries. Jahangir Alam, senior upazila fishery officer, said fishery department with assistances from law enforcers operated a drive against netting and selling fish fries including Jatka to save and boost fishing wealth. Under this drive the team raided different shops of selling nets at Bazaar Road area of the city at about 2:00 PM. During this drive more than 4,000 kilograms of thickly knitted nets, popularly known as ‘Current Jaal’, were recovered from different shops. Then Goutam Poddar, 50, Ashotosh Poddar, 31, and Amit Kumar Saha alias Vutto, 40, were detained from adjacent Fariapatty area for marketing those illegal ‘current nets’.
After that a mobile court formed by Abdur Rouf Mia, upazila nirbahi officer, awarded each of the detained three businessmen to one-year non-rigorous imprisonment.
Students, teachers demand proper edn atmosphere

Students, teachers and employees of Dakshin Surma Degree College in the district have demanded bringing back the proper educational environment, which is being ruined due to ongoing nonstop blockade and hartal. They put the demand by forming a human chain in front of the college on Saturday noon. Students of the college sought security to sit in the examinations, to attend classes with secured atmosphere. They have said the politicians of the BNP-led 20-party alliance have no right to destroy academic life of the students across the country in the name of political movement. The human chain programme was arranged according to the countrywide scheduled programme of the National University. The programme was, addressed, among others, by Principal of the college Shamsul Islam, College Staff Council Secretary Assistant Professor Motilal Das, Assistant Professor Muhibur Rahman, Lecturer Moynul Haque and Lecturer Syeda Banu.
Jubo Dal leader held in Sunamganj
Police have arrested a central Jubo Dal leader from an area adjacent to Hasonnogor sadar hospital in Sunamganj. The arrestee is Sohel Ahmed, member of central executive committee of Jubo Dal and the joint convener of the party’s district unit. He is also the president of the party’s municipal unit. Sadar OC Makbul Hossain Molla said: ‘He was arrested on Sunday morning in a case filed over the clash at old court area on January 5.’ District BNP leaders, including Convener Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, former whip Advocate Fazlul Hoque Ashpia, Kalim Uddin and others demanded Sohel’s immediate release.
