Tourists throng Shimul Bagan in Sunamganj

Tourists thronged Shimul Bagan in Tahirpur upazila to celebrate Pahela Falgun (first day of spring) and Valentine’s Day recently. Shimul Bagan, a garden of Shimul tree (scientific name Bombax ceiba), wore a festive look with the presence of hundreds of tourists in the area. Joynal Abedin, a tree love, planted about 3,000 Shimul trees on 2,400 acres of land in 2003 beside Jadukata River. Youths in red and yellow attires celebrated Pahela Falgun, and the Valentine’s Day on the same day as Bangla Academy has revised Bangla Calendar to match it with the Gregorian calendar.
Workshop on prevention of fake notes held

A day-long public awareness-raising workshop to prevent counterfeit notes was held at Sonali Bank Ltd. Bhangura Bazar Branch of Pabna organized by Bangladesh Bank on Thursday. Tapan Kumar Mondal, Deputy Director of the Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh Bank, spoke as the main modaretor in the workshop. Shahibur Rahman, Brance Manager presided over the meeting. Among others head of educational institutes, NGO representatives, Bank officials- employees and customers participated in the workshop.
Five women accorded ‘Joyeeta reception’ in Barishal

Five women of the district successful in 5 different sectors were accorded with “Joyeeta Reception” at Ashwini Kumar Hall in Barisal on Tuesday noon. Barisal Divisional Administration organised the function with the association of ministry of women and children affairs and directorate of women affairs. The function was presided over by Yamin Chowdhury, divisional commissioner, and addressed among others by Begum Farida Parvin, additional secretary, Fakhrul Kabir, joint secretary of women and children affairs ministry as chief and special guests, S M Ajiar Rahman, deputy commissioner Barishal, Prof. Shah Sajeda, district president Conscious Citizen Committee of TIB, Rabeya Khatun, district president Mohila Parishad, Rashida Begum, retired district officer of women affairs. The programme was conducted by Dilara Khanam, deputy director of divisional office of women affairs directorate. In the programme Shahinur Aktar of Patuakhali in economic success category, Hasin Ara Begum of Barishal in education and employment, Halima Khatun of Barguna as successful mother, Manowara Begum of Jhalakathi in prevention of repression and Nayon Tara of Pirojpur in social development, awarded as best joyeeta in divisional level. Each of the awarded joyeeta received crest, scarf, cash reward and certificate as sign of recognitions for their achievements. The speakers of the programme said government has taken different initiatives to create women-friendly atmosphere in the country so that the women can play an important role for country’s socio-economic development. These women were titled Joyeeta (a Bengali word for winning women). Joyeeta Onneshone Bangladesh – a government initiative introduced in 2009 – has had a tremendous impact on the society. Grassroots women have responded well to the initiative, showing a positive indicator of women’s empowerment, the awarded ‘Joyeeta’s said.
