BGB seizes gold, arms in Benapole

Border Guard Bangladesh men on Saturday noon seized a tot of 715 grams of gold bars and arrested a woman raiding an area at Ghiba frontier under Benapole port police station while the border guard men seized two foreign made pistols from Baroanchra frontier under the police station early hours on same day, said BGB officials. Lt Col Jahangir Hossain, commandig officer, 26 Border Guard Battalion told New Nation that acting on a tip off the BGB personnel seized a total 8 pieces gold bars weighing 715 grams after arresting Rokeya Begum, wife of Mizan of Benapole from Ghiba frontier at around 12 noon. ‘ The gold bar were being taken to India’, he added. The BGB men in another oeration seized two foreign pistold in an abandoned condition at Baroanchra frontier under Benapole port police station at around 4am on Saturday. But none was arrested. The arms were smuggled into the country from India, said Ayub Hossain, company commander, 26 Border Guard Battalion.
New college building inaugurated in Chapainawabganj

A newly constructed three storeyed building of Balugram Adarsha College in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila was inaugurated on Sunday. Law maker of Chapainawabganj Sadar constituency Md Abdul Wadud inaugurated the building as chief guest. The inaugural function was held on the college premises with the principal of the college Md. Saidur Rahman in the chair. Among others, deputy commissioner of Chapainawabganj Mohammad Jahangeer Kobir as special guest, Rajshahi regional director of National University Professor Dr. Md. Jahangir Hossain, principal of Nawabganj Government College Professor Sultana Razia, former principal of Chapainawabganj Government Women College Professor Dr. Md. Siraj Uddin spoke on the occasion. The welcome speech was given by the vice principal of the college NSM Mahbubur Rahman. After the discussion, a grand cultural function and annual feast was also held.The college sources said, the building was constructed with its own resources and local donation.

Finance Minister A M A Muhith yesterday claimed that BNP chief Khaleda Zia was trying to start a civil war in the country, which is why the number of murders increased in the capital. Speaking to reporters at the district conference of Rotary International in Sylhet city yesterday, he said: ‘She is inciting murders in Dhaka because she wants a civil war to happen. But she will not succeed because the government will never allow it.’ He made the remark when asked about the European Union’s concern about a possible civil war in Bangladesh.’She [Khaleda] has no collaboration with the people of the country. That is why she has no clue about the sufferings of common people.
She wants to grab power by holding the people hostage through violence and hartal-blockade.’

 Avijit killing protested in Kurigram

A human chain was formed beside Kurigram-Chilmari road in front of Kurigram Press Club in Kurigram town at 11:30 am on Saturday protesting Avijit Roy killing and demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to his killers. At least one hundred activists of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Sommilito Sangashkritik Jot, Bangabandhu Parishad, Bangladesh Mohila Parishad and Bigyan Chetona Parishad took part in the human chain with their organisation banners. Speakers said Avijit Roy was a founder of free minded blogger and progressive writer. He taught physics at Dhaka University and used to work in US as a software engineer. Speakers urged the government to ensure rights of freely expression of opinion through immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to Avijit Roy’s killers. The sangashkritik jot President Harun Ar Rashid Lal, journalist Sana Lal Bakshi, the mohila parishad president Rawshan Ara Chawdhury, the gatak dalal nirmul committee president Jothi Ahmed, the press club secretary Shaymol Bhawmik and Advocate Amjad Hossain spoke in the human chain.
