Cop killed in Bagerhat road mishap

Rezaul Karim (55), a SI of DB police, Bagerhat met his tragic end just in front of Bagerhat Court campus when he was run over by a speeding truck on Sunday afternoon. The deceased hailed from the village Ghasiara under Sreepur Upazila in Magura district. It is learnt from the police and the eye-witnesses that in the afternoon at about 3 pm the ill-fated police officer left the court by a motor cycle after discharging his official duties and when he just reached the road side of Khulna-Bagerhat Highway that passes just by the side of the Court campus the speeding truck bound for Khuna dashe him violently. As a result, his helmet was broken into pieces; he was fatally injured and expired instantly. The dead body was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The killer truck was seized by police; but its driver and helper managed to escape. It may be mentioned here that only 2 year ago another police officer was killed on the same place when he was crushed under the wheels of a speeding vehicle. Khulna-Bagerhat Highway is very busy at the point. So, people are strongly demandingnthe placing of traffic police there and construction of an over bridge at the point immediately.
Dialogue to eliminate child labour held in Rangpur

Rangpur City Corporation in collaboration Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) has organized a private sector consultation on child friendly city initiatives children this afternoon at Rangpur Chamber conference room. Rangpur City Mayor Mostafizar Rahman spoke as Chief Guest, UNICEF Rangpur Office-in-Charge Sonia Afrin, RCCI President Mostofa Sohrab Chowdhury and Rangpur Panel Mayor Mahmudur Rahman spoke as Special Guests at this UNICEF supported consultation event. UNICEF Child Protection Officer Jesmin Hossain spoke the key note speaker at the event. As Chief Guest, City Mayor Md Mostafizar Rahman promised city corporation support for the children in distress and making a child-friendly Rangpur city gradually. RCCI President Mostofa Sohrab Chowdhury emphasized on joint collaboration among private sector, government institutions and community for driving out child labour. As Special Guest, Sonia Afrin, UNICEF Rangpur Office-in-Charge urged all for collective efforts to improve the lives of children within their jurisdiction by realizing their rights as articulated in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. She said that all children should have a fair chance in life regardless of their locality, religion, economic condition, gender or ability. RCCI Directors, business representatives and city corporation officials gave importance on conducting in-depth study to identify root causes of child labour in Rangpur, community level awareness, youth skill development, preventing drop-out from school and good parenting to eliminate child labour.
Two held with stolen gold jewellery in Gafargaon

Dhanmondi Thana police recovered stolen gold ornaments from Gafargaon recently. A woman and a gold trader were held in this connection. Sources from Gafargaon and Dhanmondi Thana police said, Ripa Akter(25) a housemaid working in the house of a woman named Farjana Islam in Dhanmondi Police Station as a housekeeper for the past one month. Getting the opportunity the housekeeper named Ripa Akter missing a week ago with 6000 gram golden. Farjana Islam has filed a theft case to Dhanmondi Thana as a plaintiff. Later, t he next Saturday morning, the housekeeper was arrested from the Uthuri village of Gafargaon Union in this Upazila and took her to Lakhmi’s factory at Jamtola.Dhanmondi Thana police arrested the owner Shonkor Roy of Ma Lakhmi Shilpaloy with gold. In this regard, Ripa Akter informed that she sold a large foreign chain and two hand bangles foreign to Shonkor. But Shonkor Roy, a gold trader also admitted that he has bought three gold from Ripa for Tk 6000.OC Onukul Sarker of Gafargaon Thana said, Police with the help of Gafargaon police station and took them to Dhanmondi police station in the morning.
