One held with 1,485 Yaba tablets

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged illegal drug peddler with 1,485 pieces of yaba tablets from Kansat village under Shibganj upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon. The arrested was identified as Mizan Ali, 24, of the aforesaid area. RAB said, acting on secret information, an operation team of the RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj camp raided the area around 2.45 pm and nabbed Mizan with the contraband yaba tablets. The arrested person was handed over to the police of Shibganj thana with a case, the sources added.
Youth hacked to death in Khulna
KHULNA: A young man was hacked to death, allegedly by his rivals, in Khanbari area of Sonadanga upazila on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam Russel, 18, son of Robiul Sheikh of the area. Md Shakiluzzaman, additional deputy commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), said Russel was killed following previous feud over establishing supremacy in the area. Locals said the incident took place around 6pm when Russel along with another youth was riding a motorcycle towards Khan Bari area from Sonadanga bus terminal. When he reached Khan Bari, miscreants swooped on him and hacked him indiscriminately before fleeing the spot. Doctors pronounced Russel dead when he was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Shakiluzzaman said they are trying to arrest the killers, reports UNB.
Puratan Bazar fish sale centre declared formalin-free
GAIBANDHA: Puratan Bazaar of the district town was declared as formalin free fish sale centre on Wednesday at the initiative of Sadar upazila dministration, upazila fisheries office and Bazar committee. A function in this regard was held at the office of Bazar committee of the town here yesterday afternoon. Sadar upazila chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and officer in charge of Sadar Thana Khan M. Shahriar was present at the event as the special guest. Presided over by UNO Uttam Kumar Roy the function was also addressed among others by senior Sadar upazila fisheries officer Sanjoy Banerjee, president of Bazar committee Sekendar Ali and fish trader Krishna Kumar Dash. After elaborate discussion, upazila chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir declared the Bazar as formalin free fish sale centre. A number of peoples including fisheries officials, fish traders, consumers and media men were present on the occasion. Senior upazila fisheries officer Sanjoy Banerjee said earlier, they conducted the drives at the Bazar several times but no formalin mixed fishes were found there. Considering it, they declared the Bazar as formalin free fish sale center, reports BSS.
Swiss envoy visits Water Resource Management Project in Barind
RAJSHAHI: Switzerland Ambassador to Bangladesh Rene Holenstain on Monday visited drought-prone Barind areas in Rajshahi district to see the activities of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) project. While visiting Babudying village under Godagari upazila, he exchanged views with the community people related to their availability of drinking water supply. The ambassador also witnessed a surface water based irrigation scheme at Baliaghata village under the same upazila where around 800 farmers are being benefited directly from the scheme. He was informed that over 2.80 lakh drought hit-families, including 80,000 ethnic minorities, have been brought under safe drinking water through commissioning of 390 submersible pumps in the high Barind tract. The pumps along with 20,000 feet pipelines were commissioned with intervention of the IWRM project. The drought-hit people, including 1.49 lakh women, in 1,280 remote villages are getting facilities of safe drinking water. The project is being implemented in drought affected 39 Union Parishads and three municipalities in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon districts since 2014. DASCOH Foundation and Swiss Red Cross with financial support from Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation-SDC are implementing the project, reports BSS
