Early marriage foiled in Chandpur

An attempt to marry off a minor girl was foiled by the local administration in Kochua Upazila recently. The name of the girl Roxana Begum , a student of class vii and daughter of Anwar Hossain of Shing Adda village under Kochua Upazila , was scheduled to get married with a young man of Boruchar village in Chandina Upazila of Cumilla on Thursday afternoon. Preparation to solemnize the marriage was going on in full swing. On getting information through 999, Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land)A T Mitra along with Office Assistant of Land Office Shankar Chandra and Thana Police rushed to the spot and stopped the marriage attempt as the girl is yet minor and underaged nor suitable for marriage as per Government rule. The parents were convinced of the matter. Local UP Chairman and members were also present on the occasion. The parents were alerted about early marriage of the girl.
Mobile servicing training for ethnic begins

Some twenty youths from the ethnic minority families have got scopes of building their capacity and skill through receiving training on mobile phone servicing and repairing in Chapainawabganj district. Agriculture Sustainable and Socio-economic Development Organization (ASSEDO), a national level voluntary development organization, organized the training under its “Fighting Forced Labour with Adivasi and Dalit Communities in South Asia” project. Department of Youth Development (DYD) is extending overall support to the training programme. This was revealed in opening session of a month-long residential training on the promising trade and business sector at DYD Building Auditorium in the district yesterday. DYD Deputy Director Zabed Iqbal, ASSEDO Executive Director Rabiul Alam and its Field Coordinators Mahbub Jaman, Musammat Daisy and Aminul Islam addressed the inaugural ceremony. The meeting was told that around 4,000 ethnic minority people including 2,000 women will be engaged in various income-generating activities in Barind area in phases for lifting them out of poverty by December, 2021. To this end, 1000 of the enlisted people from 2000 households will be brought under need-based training on various trades and vocations like electrics, mobile, mechanic, tailoring, computer operating, beautification, driving, carpentry and building construction. The skill and capacity building activities are being implemented under the three-year project in 30 villages under Tanore Upazila in Rajshahi and Nachole Upazila in Chapainawabganj districts.
Elderly woman killed in Habiganj road crash

An elderly woman was killed after being hit by an unknown vehicle at Bijonarpar area in Nabiganj Upazila of Habiganj recently. The deceased was identified as Khelaphati Bibi, wife of Khotai Miah of Bashdor village under Debpara UP of the Upazila. According to police and locals, Khelaphati Bibi was hit by a Dhaka-bound vehicle around 8:00 pm when she was going to Bashdor village from Goplar Bazar. She was killed on the spot. On information, Sherpur highway police rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Md Iqbal Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nabiganj Police Station, confirmed the information.
