Death anniv of 5 rickshawpullers observed in Jessore

Rickshaw- Van Worker’ Union, Jessore observed martyred day on Sunday following the murder of five rickshaw pullers in police firing on February 8, 1990 in Jessore town. Wazed Ali, a rickshaw puller died in Jessore Kotwali police custody on February 8, 1990. Fire break outs in Jessore town following the death of the rickshaw puller for which four other rickshaw pullers were killed in police firing on the day. To remember the death of the rickshaw pullers, Rickshaw- Van Workers’ Association, Jessore chalked out several programmes in Jessore town. The programmes include placing of floral wreaths at the memorial at Daratana, hoisting of black flag, wearing black badges and discussion meeting.
GD filed for vandalising newspaper office in Jhenidah

The editor of the Daily Nabochitra has lodged a general diary (GD) against the miscreants with Kaliganj police station on Sunday noon protesting vandalises of the office. On the same day at 7-30 pm Jhenidah Press Club president called an urgent meeting at the Press Club and take necessary make aware the journalists. Alauddin Azad editor of the Daily Nabochitra has lodged the GD on Sunday noon at around 1-00 pm with Kaliganj police station. Alauddin Azad told that a ruling party leader declined to name said he is threatening to death to the Barta editor Asif Iqbal Kazal. He added that if the miscreants are not nabbed they will form a human chain on 10.02.15 in front of the DC office Jhenidah. Earlier, on Saturday morning some miscreants had vandalized The daily Nabochitra office at Kaliganj upazila town. He demanded enquiry and punishment of the involved ones.
Hartal passes off peacefully in Sylhet

The 2nd day of the fresh 72-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance alongside its ongoing countrywide indefinite transport blockade, passed off without any violent incident in Sylhet city Monday. The alliance called the shutdown as part of its movement for, what it says, restoring democracy and people’s voting right and protesting the government’s repressive acts and growing incidents of extrajudicial killing. The premier Sylhet city witnessed a very poor response as civic life was normal during the shutdown. Police and witnesses said that there were hardly any picketing and procession by the supporters during the shutdown.
Jamaat leader arrested in Sylhet
Police arrested a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami from Kamushana village in Dakshin Surma Upazial of the district on Sunday evening. The arrested was identified as Moulana Lukman Ahmed, secretary of South District Jamaat and Former Upazila Parishad chairman of Dakshin Surma. Dakshin Surma Police Fari officer-in-charge Shofiqul Islam said on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Moulana Lukman Ahmed around 3:30 pm. Police arrested Lukman on charges of his involvement in subversive activities and obstructing on duty police, the SI added.
