Old woman roasted alive

An old woman named Sahela Bibi (70) met her tragic end and properties worth Tk.3 lakh were gutted when the house of her son-in-law Sultan Howladar of village Gazalia within Purikhali Union under Morrelganj Upazila in the district caught fire in the early hours on Friday. Eyewitnesses said that it was scheduled that the marriage of a daughter of Sultan Howladar, a retired postmaster would be held on Friday and preparations were going on in full swing in the house to make it success. Different kinds of delicious cakes were being prepared on Thursday at night. But in the early hours (at about 1 am) on Friday a fire originated from a burning oven in a kitchen spread to the adjacent dwelling house of Sultan Hawldar and within moments it engulfed the house. At that time the neighbouring people and the villagers were in deep sleep. So, the fire went out of control without any resistance. On hearing hue and cry of the inmates of the house some neighbouring people rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after a long fighting for about 2 hours On the other hand, all the inmates who were in the house came out from it, but ill-fated Sahela Begum who could come out from the house was roasted alive and properties including the materials purchased for the marriage purpose were brunt to ashes. Consequently, joy suddenly turned into sorrows.
Body recovered from locked hotel room

Dead body of a boarder at Hotel Melody, a residential hotel at Agorpur Road of the city, has been recovered from the locked room on Friday noon. The victim was identified as Nizamul Islam, 54, son of Adam Ali, from Abakash, Kawnia main Road of Barisal city. He was staying since January 17 at room number 17 of the hotel, said Sahjahan Mia, manager of Hotel Melodi. Police was informed and dead body sent to Barisal Sher e Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy at about 2:00 pm, said Sub Inspector Ataur Rahman of Barisal Kotwali Police Station and investigation officer of the case. Police suspected that the case was a normal death.
One gets 14-yr RI in arms

A court here in Chapainawabganj sentenced an arms trader to 14 years rigorous imprisonment on Thursday afternoon. The convicted person has been identified as Md. Shamim, 35, son of Alamgir Master of Koilar Diar village under Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district. Chapainawabganj district and session judge Kabita Khanam gave the verdict. According to the prosecution story, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 raided Shamim’s house on October 2, 2013 at around 2-30 pm and arrested him with four pistols, eight magazines and 14 rounds of bullets. Next day Shamim was handed over to the police of Shibganj thana with a case. Investigating officer of the case sub inspector Mohammad Ali submitted charge sheet against him to the court on October 28, 2013. After hearing the witnesses, the court became sure of the charges and handed down the punishment in presence of the convict.
Four Shibir men detained at Trishal

Police arrested 4 activities of Islami Chhatra Shibir at 7.30 am. at Trishal Bazar area in Mymebsibgh yesterday. Trishal police said detainees, Nurol Akher (25), Abdul Aziz (23), Md. Anamul (22), Abu Bakkar Siddique (24) when they were preparing to vandalize vehicles at Raimone area. Police a case against them at Trishal Thana.
162 bottles of Indian liquor seized
SUNAMGANJ: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh in a drive seized 162 bottles of Indian liquor from Manaipara area in Bishwambharpur upazila on Thursday. Tipped off, a team of BGB-8 led by Habildar Abdus Salam conducted a drive in the area and seized 162 bottles of Indian liquor of ‘Officers’ Choice’ brand near international pillar no. 1207, said BGB-8 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Golam Mahiuddin Khandaker. However, none was arrested in this connection as the smugglers managed to flee sensing the presence of the border guards, reports UNB.
