More than 1,000 firefighters battle Portugal wildfires

More than a thousand firefighters battled Sunday to control wildfires in central Portugal that have forced village evacuations, in a region where dozens were killed in huge blazes in 2017.
The firefighters were deployed to tackle three fires in the mountainous and heavily forested Castelo Branco region, 200 kilometres north of Lisbon, according to the website of the Civil Protection.

Hindu priest attacked near temple in US

A Hindu priest was attacked by a 52-year-old man while he was walking down the street in his religious garb near a temple in Floral Park, New York, according to a US media report.
Swami Harish Chander Puri said that around 11 a.m. (local time) Thursday, near the Shiv Shakti Peeth in Glen Oaks, while he was walking down the street in his religious garb, a man came up from behind and started hitting him, repeatedly, PIX 11 news channel reported.

Indonesian soldier killed in fresh Papua attack

An Indonesian soldier was killed in a gun battle with separatist rebels in the restive province of Papua as he guarded a building site, the military has said.
A group of soldiers had been watching over the construction of a bridge in the remote Nduga district, where troops were also attacked last year. “It happened very quickly, a series of shots were fired from behind the bush. It was a hit-and-run style,” Papua military spokesman Muhammad Aidi said in a statement late Saturday.

Australian woman allegedly beheads mother

An Australian woman charged with murder has been sent for a medical assessment amid reports she decapitated her mother and left the head outside a neighbour’s house.
Police said the body of a 57-year-old woman was found inside her Sydney home on Saturday night, in what they described as one of the “most horrific” crime scenes they had seen.

5 family members killed in Texas
3-vehicle crash

Five people were killed and seven others hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash in South Texas on Saturday.
Sgt. Ruben San Miguel, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the crash occurred at 10:56 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 59, five miles northeast of Victoria. San Miguel said there were 10 passengers total in the van. The passengers are all related and were traveling south for vacation, San Miguel added.
