Death toll in Nepal’s monsoon rises to 50

The death toll in Nepal from flash floods and landslides in the past three days rose to 47 on Sunday, with dozens missing and injured, the government said.
Incessant monsoon rains have pounded many areas in mostly mountainous Nepal since Thursday, submerging large swathes of land, innundating homes, and destroying bridges and roads across the country.

Spain rescues 141 migrants at sea in one day

A total of 141 migrants from the sub-Sahara region were rescued at sea Saturday between Spain and Morocco, from a variety of makeshift vessels, the Spanish maritime rescue service said.
Two boats carrying 86 people, one of which was already beginning to sink, were recovered in the Alboran Sea, the stretch of the Mediterranean between the two countries, a spokesman for the service told AFP.

Armed man dead after attacking US immigration jail

An armed man who attacked a US immigration detention facility with “incendiary devices” has been shot dead after a confrontation with police in the northwestern city of Tacoma, authorities said.
Officers arrived at the Northwest Detention Center early Saturday after a report the man – armed with a rifle – had set a car on fire and had attempted to ignite a large propane tank, the city police department said in a statement.

Quake hits Indonesia

A major 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit off the remote Maluku islands in eastern Indonesia Sunday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake struck about 165 kilometres (100 miles) south-southwest of the town of Ternate in North Maluku province at 6:28 pm local time, at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.
