Zamdani Mela begins in Chandpur

The first ever month -long ‘Zamdani Shilpo Mela’ kicked off in the district town on Saturday afternoon. Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni-MP, formally inaugurated the mela amid applause at the local Municipal Eidgah maidan. DC Majedur Rahman Khan, Sadar UNO Kanij Fatema, party leaders , activist and organisers of the mela were present on the occasion. The Minister then went round different stalls and expressed satisfaction. She opined that the mela would help popularise the Zamdani dresses and immensely help flourish Zamdani shilpo. An organiser -Ismail Hossain Shipon has told this correspondent that there are 59 stalls here. Zamdani traders from across the country are participating in this mela which is open from morning till night at 10 pm. Besides, artificial fountain, children’s amusement facilities, Chorka on horse, merry -go- round, riding on boats for fun are available for children’s amusements here.
Press conference held on achieving SDGs

Speakers at a press conference stressed on strengthening of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) timely. Rangpur divisional unit of ‘Bangladesh CSO-NGO Coordination Process’ organised the press conference at Rangapur Sahitya Parishat auditorium here with its Convener freedom fighter Akbor Hossain in the chair.Akbar Hossain discussed importance of localisation of funding for strengthening CSOs-NGOs in the event before the ‘Bangladesh CSO-NGO National Convention’ to be held at Dhaka recently to adopt ‘Dhaka Declaration’ for proper implementation of pledges of donor agencies. He said representatives of the Government of Bangladesh, United Nations, International Non Governmental Organisation (INGO), NGO Bureau, National and local NGOs will participate in the national convention.He laid emphasis on proper execution of pledges of donor agencies in localisation of funding for local CSOs-NGOs to work as development partners of the government for accelerating uplift to cut poverty and attain SDGs. Executive Director of Self-help and Advancement Development Organisation Khondker Sarwar Jamil, Rangpur unit’s Member-secretary of ADAB Ahsan Habib, Regional Coordinator of Hunger Project Rajesh Dey and President of ‘Swarno Nari Association’ Monjushree Saha were present.
Youth jailed for stalking schoolgirl
A mobile court here on Sunday sentenced a youth to six months’ jail for stalking a schoolgirl at Chandpur village in Shaharasti upazila of the district. The convict is Rakib Hossain Javed, 30, son of Delwar Hussain of Suchipara village of the Upazila. Quoting locals, Shaharasti Police Station’s Sub Inspector AK Azad said when Javed was stalking the girl on her way to school at 11 am at Chandpur village locals caught him and handed him over to police. Later, a mobile court led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Shirin Akter sentenced Javed to six months jail.
