RU to renovate its eight ponds

Rajshahi University (RU) is going to renovate its existing eight ponds for the sake of those conservation and beautification under the ‘seven pond research project’. RU’s Agriculture Project will implement the pond renovation scheme with supervision of Department of Fisheries within next three years with an estimated cost of around Taka 80 lakh. Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Engineer of RU, says the initiative has been taken to boost beautification of the ponds through various need-based development works like bank revetment, seating arrangement, transplantation of ornament trees and flower plants, construction of water out-letting infrastructures and lighting. He also says the project has provision of releasing fish fingerlings and proper conservation of those in the ponds so that the students of department of fisheries can utilize those for their research purposes. “We have taken the initiative of renovating the ponds for enhancing beautification of the university campus side by side with higher education and research,” said Professor Chowdhury Jakaria, Pro-vice-chancellor of the university. He mentioned that the ponds were decaying for lack of long-time renovation and re-excavation.
Safe Motherhood Day observed in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR: Safe Motherhood Day was observed in the district on Tuesday as part of the nationwide programme aiming to establish fundamental rights of womenfolk. District Civil Surgeon office has taken an elaborate programme to mark the day. This year’s theme of the day is “Dignity and Right: Pledge to Midwife Service at Health Centers”. A rally was brought out from Jamalpur Genral Hospital premises and it ended parading different city streets. Following the rally, a discussion was held in Dr Nazrul Islam conference room of District Civil Surgeon office. Physicians, representatives of different government and non-government organizations, among others, addressed the discussion with Civil Surgeon Dr Gautom Roy in the chair, reports BSS.
