Derailment suspends rail communication with Sylhet

The rail communications between Sylhet and the rest of the country remained suspended following derailment of a bogie of a local train in Mallikpur area of Fenchuganj upazila on Thursday morning. Imam Hossain, station master of Maizgaon rail station said that the bogie of Sylhet-bound ‘Jalalabad Express Train’ from Chattogram veered off the tracks in the area around 11:30am, disrupting the train movement on the routes. A relief train came to the spot around 12:30am and is trying to salvage the train, said the station master adding that it will take 2/3 hours.
SAU holds seminar on antibiotic resistance
Scientists and students at a seminar at Sylhet Agricultural University on Wednesday called for growing awareness on administering excessive dosages of antibiotic to domestic animals as it poses severe threat to human body. They said that antibiotic resistant bacteria develop in animal bodies through administering excessive dosages of antibiotic to cattle bodies. These bacteria could be transmitted to the human bodies when people take their meat and could even death, the discussants said. They were addressing a seminar on the issues of antibiotic resistance arranged by the university’s pathology department at the conference room of veterinary, animal and biomedical science faculty on the campus. Pathology department chairman Munira Nur moderated the seminar where Phd researchers Muhammad Al Mamun, Nahid Anjuman Bhanu and Basu Dev Pal presented three separate research papers on the genes responsible to destroy the effectiveness of antibiotics which are used for healthcare of the human and domestic animals.
4 held with 3,323 Yaba tablets in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI: In three separate anti-crime operations, law enforcing agencies nabbed four alleged drug-peddlers with 3,323 Yaba tablets in the district yesterday afternoon, said the sources concerned here yesterday. The arrested persons were identified as Ziban Hossain, 20, Rahidul Islam, 32, Sadeque Ali, 38 and Momirul Islam, 38. On tips-off, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in two separate drives, arrested Ziban, Rahidul and Sadeque Ali with 1,823 Yaba tablets from Damkurahat and Baneshwar areas red-handed.
Police of Detective Branch arrested Momirul with 1,500 Yaba tablets after conducting a sudden raid at Kasim Bazar area under Tanore Upazila. Three separate cases were recorded with the police stations concerned and the arrested persons were handed over to police with the seized contraband goods, reports BSS.
Boro harvesting in Netrakona continues
NETRAKONA : Boro paddy harvesting in this district known as ‘grain bowl’ is continuing for last two weeks while agriculture department expecting bumper production this season. Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and farmers said they are expecting bumper production of the Boro rice this season after seeing the better yielding rate of the crop. BSS correspondent while visiting different areas of the district saw that the farmers were passing their busy times in their Boro fields for harvesting the golden colored ripened Boro paddy with festive mood, reports BSS.
According to the DAE about 60 percent of the ripened Boro paddy has been harvested.
This year target was fixed for bringing 1,81,952 hectors of land under Boro cultivation with a plan for producing 7,22,821 metric tons of the rice. However, Boro was cultivated a total of 1,84,600 hectors of land, exceeding this year’s target.
Deputy Director of the DAE Habibur Rahman said farmers could farm Boro paddy on additional 2,648 hectors of land this as the weather condition was favorable and different state-run agencies including BADC, BCIC and PDB ensured proper supply of high quality seeds, seedlings, fertilizers, uninterrupted electricity supply and irrigation machineries and agricultural inputs at the door-steps of the farmers following directives of the government.
He said, over 7.5 lakhs metric tones of the Boro rice are expected to be produced in the district if the weather condition will remain favorable till ending of the harvesting period.
