Two siblings drown in Chandpur

Two siblings drowned in a pond adjacent to their home while having bath together , cheating the attention of their mother at Narayanpur Dakhshin para area in Matlab South Upazila on Thursday afternoon. The siblings were identified as Meem, 9, and her brother Sabbir Hossain,7. They were the children of Jakir Hossain -a grocer at Narayanpur Bazar. To beat the hot spell, they went secretly to have bath, disobeying their mother’s advice. The victims neighbours said, they both secretly went to have bath in the pond- adjacent to their home at around 2 pm on Thursday. At one stage of bath, both went down the water level. After frantic search by mother, they remained missing here and there. After a long time, the son’ Sabbir’s body surfaced in the water later, as though Meem remained missing till about dusk. Then after casting a fish net, Meem’s body was traced under water at around 7 pm. Local Government Primary school teacher Nemai Chandra Debnath and Matlab Press Club Secretary Shamol Das told this correspondent that a pall of gloom had descended at the area following their sudden death.

Woman ‘commits suicide’ in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: A woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at Kismat Kukhandi in Poba upazila early Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Ayesha Begum, 35, wife of Samjan. Nibaran Chandra Barman, officer-in-charge of Katakhali Police Station, said that Ayesha’s ninth grader son Anik was an extravagant. She was so much agitated by her son’s behavior. She informed her relatives that, she would commit suicide. When all the family members slept, she hanged herself with a ceiling fan. Her husband found the hanging body while he woke up for taking sehri and informed police. On information, police recovered the body, reports UNB.

Youth held with firearms in C’nwabganj  

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: The Rapid Action Battalion arrested a young man with firearms and bullets from Munnatola area in Shibganj upazila on Monday night. The arrestee is Shariful Islam, 23, son of Sadekul Islam, resident of Unishbighi area. On secret information, a team of Rab-5 conducted the drive around 10:45pm. Shariful was arrested with two pistols, six bullets and two magazines, said a press release. A case was filed, reports UNB.

Training on digital security held in Sylhet

Speakers at a programme in Sylhet on Saturday stressed the need for enhancing professional skills to use modern technologies and increase physical security by media personals to protect themselves from digital threats. They said journalists face unprecedented risks because of spreading activities by hackers and criminal groups when they cover news of conflict and unrest. So, steps should be taken to increase their safety and security, they added. They made the remark while addressing a daylong training styled ÔDigital and Physical Security for Journalists’ to encourage media professionals for developing their skills in using digital technologies and protecting themselves from unprecedented digital threats. Bangladesh NGO Network for Radio and Communications in association with Internews organised the programme at a hotel in the city that was participated by 12 journalists representing different print, electronic and online media organisations based in Sylhet. As part of the best practices to protect information, news, sources and devices, the participants experienced safe use of emails, cookies and internet at the programme. They also experienced top risks for digital security and solutions of these risks. Private television channel Bangla Vision senior news editor Ruhul Amin Rushd, Jagannath University Mass Communication and Journalism department teacher and Jamuna Television presenter Minhaj Uddin jointly conducted the daylong workshop.
