Dialogue on Child-friendly City held

Rangpur City Corporation has organised a dialogue with children on ‘Child-friendly City’ in collaboration with UNICEF in the Begum Rokeya Auditorium of RDRS complex in Rangpur on Monday. Representatives from police administration, health department, women affairs, Rangpur City Corporation, city councilors, teachers, students and under-privileged working children participated in the dialogue. Emdad Hossain, Superintendent Engineer of Rangpur City Corporation welcomed all children to the dialogue. Chief Executive Officer of Rangpur City Corporation Aktar Hossain Azad presided over the event. As Special Guest, Najibullah Hameem, Chief of UNICEF Rangpur and Rajshahi Division urged all to work for building child-friendly city and collective efforts to improve the lives of children within their jurisdiction by realizing their rights as articulated in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. While the primary responsibility for ensuring that children’s rights are realized lies with governments, other stakeholders such as civil society organizations, the private sector, academia and the media, as well as children themselves, also have an important role to play in building child-friendly cities, said Najibullah Hameem. As Chief Guest, City Mayor Md Mostafizar Rahman and the Chief Executive Officer Akter Hossain Azad promised city corporation support for the children in distress and making a child-friendly Rangpur city gradually. Students from different schools also requested for tree plantation in Rangpur city. Additional Director of Family Planning Md Mozammel Haque, Additional DIG Md Shahidullah Kaoser, Deputy Director of Women Affairs dept Kaosar Afsana, UNICEF Communication for Development Officer Monjur Ahmed and teachers from different schools talked about awareness about online safety, sexual harassment, drug addiction and recommended for installing social and family values along with administrative actions.
Young man held on raping charge in Morelganj

A young man named Jewel Shaikh (28), son of one Badsha Shaikh from village Baraikhali under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat district was arrested by the police recently on the charge committing rape on a young widow (25) of the adjacent Guabaria village with the assurance of marrying her, police sources said. It is alleged in the case that accused Jewel made an illicit relation with the victim with the promise of marriage and used to commit rape on her for a long one year. As a result, she became pregnant. Then the victim repeatedly requested the accused to marry her. But the accused refused her requests flatly. Finding no other alternative the victim lodged a case with the PS on Wednesday morning against the accused on the charge of committing rape on her and breach of trust of marrying her .K M Azizul Haq, Officer-in-charge of Morrelganj PS told, the accused was arrested on Thursday and sent him to the jail hajat while the victim was sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for her medical examination.
