IGP exchanges views with police officers

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Friday said hartal and blockade are not constitutional rights. “Hartal and blockade are illegal,” he told at a press briefing at Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) commissioner’s office here on Friday. The IGP said the members of law enforcement agencies are empowered to take legal actions against the unconstitutional activities. AKM Shahidul Hoque, said, “We will work to ensure security of the people and protect their lives and properties. The people will be with us.” Deputy Inspector General of Sylhet Range Mizanur Rahman, SMP Commissioner Quamrul Ahsan and Police Super of the district Nur-e-Alam Mina, among others, were present on the occasion.
Workshop on preventing early marriage ends in C’nawabganj

A three day long workshop on checking early marriage concluded on Saturday in Chapainawabganj. Non-government organization Proyas Manobik Unnayan Society organized the workshop from Thursday to Saturday with the financial assistance of Canada High Commission at the conference room of the NGO at Belepukur. The opening session was held with the chief executive officer of the community radio ‘Radio Mohananda’ and executive director of Proyas Hasib Hossain as chief guest. Among others, Chapainawabganj district women affairs officer Momtaz Mohol, coordinator of Proyas Shah Azad Iqbal, station manager of Radio Mohananda Aleya Ferdous, assistant station manager Takiur Rahman and trainers Firoja Khatun and Abdus Salam were present in the inaugural session. A total of 50 officials and employees of Proyas and ‘Radio Mohananda’ participated in the workshop. Speakers in the opening session stressed on social movement against early marriage in order to check population explosion in the country.
AL faction clash injures 6 in Hizla

Clash between two factions of ruling Awami league injured at least six activists at Ekota Bazaar under Gourobdi union in Hizla upazila of Barisal on Saturday noon. Gourobdi union AL president and local UP member Habib Sardar said followers of two factions of AL led by Hizla upazila AL president Sultan Mahmud Tipu and secretary Nazrul Islam Milan, engaged in chasing and counter chasing during observing founding anniversary of BCL, student front organisation of AL, on last January 3. Since then tensions were going on between two rival factions of AL. Following that tensions activists of both groups engaged in chasing and clash with lethal and sharp weapons on Saturday noon at Ekota Bazaar. The clashes continued with breaks from about 12:00 to 13:30 PM Saturday noon injuring at least six activists of both factions. Among the injured condition of severely chopped Taher Matubbar, 26, was severe and would be sending to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital. Others treated at local community clinic, Habib Sardar added.
