Theft at writer Mazed Newaz’s residence

A theft was committed at the Jashore Jail Road based residence of poet and writer Mazed Newaz. Thieves took away Tk 65,000 in cash, ornaments of gold, a laptop, camera and other valuables early Sunday, said Kazi Shahed Newaz, brother of the poet. He told newsmen that miscreants stormed at the residence of Mazed in absence of his family members. Hearing the information police rushed to the spot. None was arrested and no case was lodged.
Nor’wester hits Jashore
Big trees were uprooted and many thatched houses were damaged as a strong nor’wester swept over Jashore on Saturday night. The nor’wester that lashed over Jashore lasted over an hour till around 9pm on the day, locals said. We had to pass a terrible night without the supply of electricity light storm and raining continued till about Sunday dawn, said Kazi Shahana Akhter, a resident at Nawapara industrial town. However, no report of major casualties reached.
World Health Day observed

The World Health Day was observed in the Faridpur on Sunday with the theme- “Equality and solidarity-based universal primary healthcare”. To mark the day, the District Health Department arranged a colourful rally followed by a discussion meeting. The rally starting from Faridpur deputy commissioner office paraded the main street of the town. Civil Surgeon Dr. Abu Jaher presided over the post-rally discussion. Deputy Commissioner Ummay Salma Tanzia addressed the discussion at DC office conference room as chief guest. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rokshana Rahman, Sadhinata Chikhithshak parisad, district committee President Dr. MA Jalil, Dr. Md. Hafizur also addressed the discussion, among others. Addressing the occasion, the speakers said like other countries many people in Bangladesh are suffering from mental depression. Mental health care is equally important like physical health care. They put importance on physical and mental fitness of every citizen.
Jute godown gutted in Chuadanga
CHUADANGA: A jute godown was gutted as a fire broke out in Pashurhat area of Alamdanga upazila on early Sunday. Police and Fire Service sources said the fire broke out at the godown of one Mohibul Islam of the area. On information, three fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze following two hours’ frantic effort. Abdus Salam, deputy director of Chuadanga Fire Service and Civil Defense, said one thousand maunds of jute were burnt down in the fire. It fire was ignited from electric short circuit, he added, reports UNB.
3 child marriages foiled in Sirajganj
SIRAJGANJ: The local administration foiled three child marriages in Sadar upazila on Friday night. Led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) Anisur Rahman, a mobile court stopped the child marriages at Kandapara, Dumur Golapi and Khalishakura villages of the upazila. The three girls who were saved from being the victims of early marriage are Shanti Khatun, 13, Ayesha Khatun, 13, Class-VIII students, and Arifa Khatun, 16, a Class-X student. At Kandapara village, the mobile court also fined bridegroom Rezaul Karim, 31, and bride’s father Tk 5,000 each, saying they would have to serve one month in jail if they fail to pay the penalty. The mobile court conducted a drive at Dumur Golapi village around 8 pm and fined the bridegroom – Nur Nabi, 21 – and slapped the same penalty on him. Later, the mobile court, led by Anisur, went to Khalishakura village and halted the bid to marry the Class-X girl off to a Sihab Ali, 20. Guardians of the three girls also gave separate undertakings that they will not arrange their marriage until they come of age, reports UNB.
