Italy on Saturday marked 10 years since a devastating earthquake hit L’Aquila, killing 309 people and destroying much of the historic city. A ceremony in L’Aquila, northeast of Rome, remembered the dead and the 1,600 injured when the devastating quake hit in the early hours of April 6, 2009.

Iran orders new evacuations amid fresh flood fears

Iranian authorities ordered the evacuation of six cities along the Karkheh river in southwestern Khuzestan province on Saturday after more rain sparked fears of new flooding, state news agency IRNA said.
Six cities alongside Karkheh river in southwestern Iran “must be evacuated as soon as possible,” Khuzestan governor Gholamreza Shariati told IRNA.

Taliban attacks kill 7 Afghan police, 3 civilians

Multiple Taliban attacks have killed at least seven policemen and three civilians across Afghanistan Saturday, as insurgents continue with near daily assaults on government and civilian targets.
Taliban killed at least four policemen when they stormed a security check point in northern Sari Pul province, a provincial official said. Mohammad Noor Rahmani, head of the provincial council, said five others were wounded in Saturday’s attack.
Sudan oppon renews calls for anti-Bashir protests

The organizers behind months of anti-government demonstrations in Sudan are calling for fresh marches in the capital, Khartoum, and other cities. The Sudanese Professionals Association, an umbrella group of independent professional unions, has been spearheading anti-government protests that erupted in December over spiraling prices and a failing economy.

Thousands protest against Honduras President

Thousands of people marched through the streets of the Honduran capital Friday night demanding the resignation of President Juan Orlando Hernandez and an investigation of him and his family.
The protestors, from the so-called Movimiento Indignados (Indignant Movement) and numbering around 5,000 according to reporters, shouted “get out J.O.H.,” as they marched to the public prosecutor’s office.

Three people are dead, including an alleged hostage taker, after a day-long standoff in Georgia. A pregnant woman and her teenage son were killed, according to Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB.

Two police officers were also injured in the incident, authorities said.
