Genocide Day observed in Bagerhat

For third successive year, ‘one-minute blackout’ programme was observed in Bagerhat district town on Monday night to mark the Genocide Day. On the occasion Bagerhat District Unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League formally lighted the candles and placed floral wreaths at the local Dak-bungalow ghat on the bank of the river Daratana (where the people were executed by Pakistani army and their local collaborators during the Liberation War) in the evening. It may be recalled that in the year1917 the government officially declared March 25 as the ‘Genocide Day’, marking the widespread killings by Pakistani Army on unarmed Bangalees on the black night of March 25, 1971.
Crime prevention conference held in Rajshahi

A monthly Crime prevention conference of Rajshahi district police was held at District Police Super Office Conference Room on Wednesday. Chaired by District Police Super Mohammod Shohidullah, Additional Police Supers Mahmudul Hasan, Abul Kalam Azad (Puthia circle), Sumon Dev (Sadar circle), and Senior Assistant Police Supers Abur Razzak, Nure Alam (Charghat circle) were present in the programme. During the meeting, all police personnel were asked to strengthen the anti-crime campaign and the anti-drug drive in future. Officer in charges of Rajshahi district Detective Branch (DB) of police and different police stations were present on the occasion, among others.
3 shops gutted in Jashore

Three shops were gutted including a book shop in Garibshah road of Jashore town on Wednesday night. The damaged shops are: Ahmed Traders, crowd library and a Samim cloth shop. The owner of the shops said the damage goods were worth ten lakhs. Eyewitnesses said that a fire broke out in the back of Ahmed Trader’s book shop at Garib Shah Road in 10pm. Due to the closure of the door, fire broke out in the adjacent shops. However, the opinion of the witnesses and the victims that fire has started from the electrical short circuit. Later, a Fire Service Unit came to the spot and controled the fire. Jessore Fire Service and Civil Defense Assistant Director Wadud Hossain said that Immediately one of our units went to the spot and do their best to ease the situation
20 hurt as students clash during Independence Day prog in Habigabj
HABIGANJ: At least 20 students were injured in a clash involving students of three schools over playing flute during the Independence Day programme at Sheikh Russel Mini Stadium in Bahubal upazila on Tuesday. Witnesses said the students of Hope International School and Sunshine Pre-cadet School were playing flute as they won several prizes in competitions arranged on the occasion. Agitated at the celebrations, some students of Dinnath Govt School locked into an argument with them. At one stage, they started hurling stones at each other that lasted for half an hour, leaving 20 from the both sides injured. Later, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jasim Uddin and police rushed in and controlled the situation. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment, said the UNO, reports UNB.
One killed in Thakurgaon clash over land
THAKURGAON: A man was killed in a land related dispute at Madhya Harinarayanpur in Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Muktojur Rahman, 50. Quoting victim’s family members, AshiqurRahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said that there was a long standing dispute between Muktojor and his neighbours Parul and Alam over 15 decimal land. Parul went to build a house on the disputed land in the morning. As Muktajur obstructed them, the rival group attacked him and confined him to a room of their house. Later, they beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured. The injured was taken to Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. On information, police recovered the body and arrested Parul and Pelu Mohammad, reports UNB.
