SM Sultan’s death anniv observed

The 24th death anniversary of renowned artist SM Sultan was observed in a befitting manner at his birthplace in the district on Wednesday as people from all sections of the society pay rich tributes to the great son of the country.
 The SM Sultan foundation and district administration jointly organised elaborate programmes to mark the famous artist’s death anniversary. The programmes include Quran khani, dua and milad Mahfil, art competition, discussion on Sultan’s life and works and prize giving ceremony. Over 200 children participated in the art competition at Shishu Swarga auditorium. Hundreds of people thronged Sultan’s mazar in the morning to pay their rich tributes and seek eternal blessings for the departed soul. Sultan was born at Masumdia in Narail town on 10 august, 1924. He died in Jashore Combined Military Hospital on 10 October, 1994. Sultan was adorned with Ekushey Padak in 1982, Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993. He was declared the Man of Asia in 1982 by Cambridge University and Bangladesh government declared him as resident of artist in 1984.
Ensuring adolescent friendly environ in society stressed

Moushumi Khalko, experienced what it means to be the civil surgeon of Rangpur district when she symbolically took over the role only for a day yesterday. Girls Takeover campaign, held every year by Plan International globally and in Bangladesh, to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. It is a demand for urgent social and political change to tear down the barriers of discrimination that hold girls back. MoushumiKhalko, a seventeen years old adolescent in her role as the symbolic civil surgeon of Rangpur district held a meeting with staff, participated fitness test of vision, discussing and deliberating on a variety of issues today on the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child 2018. Later, she took part in mother gathering at Arjiniamot Community Clinic, exchanged views with them, discussed mother, and child health. She also participated in an adolescent gathering in Upazila Heath complex of Gangachara, listened their views, discussed about sexual reproductive health rights and bad impact of child marriage and other girls empowerment issues. Dr. Abu Zakirul Islam (Lenin), civil surgeon, Rangpur, Dr. Gowsul Azim Chowdhury Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Gangachara and Dr Hrishikesh Sarker Programme Manager, Plan International Bangladesh Rangpur Divisional Office were present on the occasion. Championing girls’ rights is not new to Moushumi who is student of a college. In her community, she took actions to ensure adolescent friendly environment along with her peers.
