General Osmani’s 100th birthday celebrated in Sylhet

The centenary birth anniversary of the chief of armed forces in the Liberation War, General Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani, was celebrated in Sylhet on Saturday in a befitting manner through different colourful programmes. Celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of Osmani was started through cutting a cake at first hour on Friday at the Osmani Museum at Nayorpool in the city. Former army chief Lieutenant General Harun Or Rashid, Bir Pratik, also convener of Osmani’s 100th Birthday Celebration Committee, cut the cake as chief guest in the programme that was attended by the people of all walks in the society, including celebration committee secretary’s member secretary Sarwar Ahmad Chowdhury Abdal, joint-convener Aziz Ahmad Selim and its adviser freedom fighter Rafiqul Haque. The committee members also offered Fateha and placed floral wreaths at the graveyard of MAG Osmani at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in the city on Saturday morning.
They brought out a colourful rally from the Osmani Museum and marched towards the Central Shaheed Minar at Chowhatta in the city.
11 held with hemp in Sylhet
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested 11 people along with 140-gram hemp from Dakhshin Shurma upazila on Saturday night. The arrestees are Abul Hossain Mia, 25, Syed Aziz, 28, Md Khairul Miah, 25, Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, 18, Md Shohel Alam, 28, Iran Miah, 34, Md Ferdous Ahmed, 25, Md Mobarak Hossain Selim, 25, Md Kazol Miah, 26, Jasim Uddin Sajib, 22 and Md Elim Ahmed, 23. A team of Rab-9 conducted the drive in Bharthkhola Mosque Market area of the upazila headquarters around 8:30 pm and detained them along the hemp, said Md Moniruzzaman, senior assistant director of Rab-9. The arrestees were handed over to Dakhshin Surma Police Station.
BR fines 209 commuters for traveling without tickets
RANGPUR: Bangladesh Railway (BR) has penalised 209 passengers of five trains over Taka 1.06 lakh for traveling without tickets on different routes under Lalmonirhat railway division. “Led by Lalmonirhat Divisional Railway Traffic Superintendent of BR Shawkat Jamil Mohoshi, we conducted the daylong special ticket checking drives on the route from Lalmonirhat to Bamondanga on Saturday,” BR’s Assistant Traffic Superintendent Sajjat Hossain today said. During the drives, the BR officials found 209 passengers of two intercity trains ‘Kartoa Express’ and ‘Lalmoni Express’ and three commuter trains were travelling without tickets. The officials fined them Taka one lakh six thousand and 70 on the spots. “The special ticket checking drives will continue in different trains on various routes under Lalmonirhat railway division in future,” said BR’s Lalmonirhat Divisional Railway Traffic Superintendent Shawkat Jamil Mohoshi, reports BSS
