Somalia, Eritrea agree to establish diplomatic ties

The presidents of Somalia and Eritrea on Monday signed an agreement to establish diplomatic ties after over a decade of animosity, in the latest fast-track rapprochement in the Horn of Africa.
“The two countries will establish diplomatic relations and exchange ambassadors,” said a “joint declaration on brotherly relations” signed in Asmara by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Somali counterpart Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.

Zimbabwe votes in first post-Mugabe election

Zimbabweans cast their ballots Monday in the country’s first election since authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe was ousted last year, with concerns over fraud and the likelihood of a disputed result clouding voting day. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe’s former ally in the ruling ZANU-PF party, faces opposition leader Nelson Chamisa of the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) in a historic vote for the southern African nation.

High treason trial against Musharraf

A special court in Pakistan is all set to resume hearing of a high treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, which may also be a big test for Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, which is likely to form a government, a media report said today. Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Yawar Ali, who is heading the three-judge special tribunal, will visit Islamabad for three days from July 31 to August 2.

Bodies of 23 Myanmar landslide victims found

The bodies of 23 victims of a landslide in Myanmar’s northern jade mining area have been recovered, an official confirmed Monday, after a days-long search hampered by heavy monsoon rains. Rescuers are still looking for a further four victims, many of whom belong to the small ethnic Rawang minority in the remote area of Kachin state, the heart of the country’s notoriously shadowy multibillion-dollar jade industry.

Greek wildfires death toll rises to 91

Greek fire services on Sunday said three more people were confirmed killed by the wildfires that have devastated seaside resorts near Athens, bringing the death toll in the disaster to 91. Another 25 remain missing, said spokeswoman Stavroula Malliri, giving a precise figure for the first time after mounting criticism over the issue.

3 killed in US car crash

Three people died and one person was critically injured in a car crash in New Hampshire, U.S., state police said Sunday. Police said the crash may have happened on Saturday evening, but was reported only Sunday after a pedestrian discovered the wreckage in dense vegetation.
