Kuwait’s highest court sentences
lawmakers to prison

Kuwait’s highest court on Sunday ordered an opposition leader and several lawmakers imprisoned for 3 ½ years over the 2011 storming of parliament during the country’s Arab Spring protests.
The case before Kuwait’s Court of Cassation involved dozens of politicians, activists and others. The defendants were initially acquitted in the yearslong case, but a shock court decision in November resurrected the charges against them.
Rainfall death toll rises to 76 in Japan

Heavy rainfall hammered southern Japan for the third day, prompting new disaster warnings on Kyushu and Shikoku islands on Sunday, as the government put the death toll at 48 with 28 others presumed dead. Japanese government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said the whereabouts of 92 people are unknown, mostly in the southern area of Hiroshima prefecture.
30 militants killed in north Afghanistan

More than 30 militants have been killed and more than a dozen other were injured in Chamtal district of Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province since Saturday, police spokesman in the northern region Sayed Sarwar Hussaini said Sunday.
“Up to 34 rebels have been killed and 18 others injured since launching cleanup operations in Chamtal district on Saturday,” Hussaini told Xinhua.
Four hurt in Chicago copter crash

Four people were injured when a medical helicopter crashed on a highway in Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday night, with one in critical condition, officials said.
The pilot made a “mayday” radio call from a Eurocopter 135 air ambulance at about 9:15 p.m. Central Time (0215 GMT Sunday), according to a Federal Aviation Authority statement. The helicopter crashed on a ramp of the Interstate 57 highway soon after, it said.
